RyanCare - estimated cost to me at 62.
I did a little searching to find approximate health insurance premiums for a 62 year old Obviously, most elders are in Medicare, however there are a few companies that offer insurance for those in that age group, specifically for immigrants, who may not be eligible for Medicare.

Anyway, i didn't see anything with a monthly premium lower than $2,200. Which times by 12 months is $26,400. Less the $8,000 voucher - my cost $18,400 per year. And that $2,200 annual premium assumes that I have no previous health concerns (I do).

That $18,400 will pay a lot of executive bonus's, that is for sure.

The dems should never, never let this drop, and I hope they are doing some hard core research (I am sure they are), because people need to know they will have to come up with an extra $20,000 per year for retirement should they vote R.

And no telling what that $2,200 monthly premium will be in 8 years, when i HOPE to retire.

5. I hope the Dem's keep pounding on this.
And no puffy sweet talk about liberty or freedom, or even grandma.

Lay out exactly what will happen to anyone under 55, which is a whole hell of a lot of people, and ask them where they are going to get an extra $20,000 per year for retirement. Tell them the $8,000 voucher will never increase, because from what I understand it won't.

Put a screen shot of the monthly insurance bill in the background, with a big red circle around the $1,500 due before the 5th or coverage will lapse.

I know that showing granny and grampa gets the emotion going, but this law isn't about them, it is about the generation just under.

I know I am venting to the choir, but at least it is not another Palin Post. :) :) :)

4. I'm already paying $20K/yr for premiums.....
....for my wife and myself. The only relief I could get from the recent legislation passed is if my wife, who had cancer 8 yrs ago, was willing to go without insurance for 6 months. How fucked up is that? It's like...."We'll help you if you'll risk bankruptcy for 6 months." I can pay the premiums, but it takes such a big cut outta my take-home, there isn't much left to enjoy.

6. I think I have planned well enough that I can have a
decent retirement, but certainly not if I have to come up with an extra $20,000 a year. I would like to think I will have a long restful retirement.

I hope things get better for you, $20,000 a year for health insurance sounds like highway robbery.

12. It is, but who ya gonna call?
We are retired, and never expected to have to pay so much for insurance premiums. My wife just turned sixty, so she is still a few years and $100K away from any Medicare relief.

We have an income of about $80-$100K/yr. It varies year to year depending on the success of my investments, so medical insurance takes 25% of my income, and it goes up every chance they get! Fortunately, everything we have is paid for, and we have zero debt.
We hope, in a few years, that our SSI income will cover the costs of medical insurance. But what about those who don't have $100K/yr income? How can they possibly pay prices like this? They just can't. They have to risk financial ruin because our lawmakers can't come together on how to solve the crisis.

We will survive. I am 56 and can still go back to work if need be, but I don't want to, and should not have to. We decided after the cancer bout that we were going to spend every day we had left together, and have....so far.

We are not the average American family. An average family would be close, if not already, in bankruptcy, and that sucks to high heaven!

7. And who's going to insure the 85-year-old?
No insurance company is going to insure the very old at any price. They're looking to make health care like nursing home care is now--first you spend all your money and then we'll talk about paying for your care.

11. I haven't seen ANYTHING about people with existing conditions.
Ryancare is just a really, REALLY bad plan. It's the equivalent to a 10% off coupon at the Sizzler.

More people are going to go bankrupt.
More people are going to go without health care.
More people are going to die.

It's JUST that simple.

14. Mine are $480/month
through BC/BS, and I'm 63. However, that's with a $10,000 deductible, only generic prescriptions, and no lab work done in the doctor's office. Of course that will go up at my anniversary date, which is in October. I also have had cancer, and have high blood pressure, chronic bronchitis.

16. Since you are 62 now, you were 17 in '66 when Medicare passed?

If so, can you remember it being passed and what the general mood of people in your age group, and slightly above, was at the time?

My theory on the whole Medicare thing is that the people in their 60s, 70s and even 80s who are so upset with the prospect of it being changed had decided 45 years ago that they liked it and they are not about to change their minds now.

I would love to hear your views on the subject.
