Obama to visit Austin for fundraiser at W Hotel

Obama visit will be during Tuesday evening rush hour
Unlike president's last Austin visit at midday, motorcade will hit city roads at crunch time
AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

People thinking of going north on Interstate 35 into downtown during Tuesday evening's rush hour might want to think of another plan.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to arrive at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport at 5 p.m. Tuesday and, after whatever pleasantries occur with the local dignitaries on the tarmac, the president and his motorcade will head downtown for the first of two fundraisers. Right in the middle of the evening rush hour.

For security reasons, the White House is disclosing neither his route nor the whens and wheres of Obama's Austin-area trips later in the evening from his first stop, the W Hotel on West Second Street, to a fundraiser at a private home on Lake Austin, and then back to the airport for a departure somewhere around 9 p.m.

On the president's lone other visit to Austin since he assumed office - Aug. 9 last year - he took Texas 71 from the airport to I-35 in South Austin, then I-35 and East Cesar Chavez Street to the Four Seasons Hotel for a lunchtime fundraiser. Obama and his entourage then used I-35 north to the University of Texas for a speech at Gregory Gym . Air Force One whisked him away about 3:15 p.m. , meaning that the entire presidential visit was in the middle of the day...

2. lol!
Sorry, I worked in Austin when idiot son was in office and his helicopters were flying over the city. I find this rather humorous (for a variety of reasons which I will not discuss here)...

:D
