Dangers of "lion walks" revealed after latest tourist mauling
I couldn't believe this when I first heard about these "lion walks" and apparently "elephant walks" and other copycat tourist traps popping up across Africa. I learned of this after a local woman got attacked; a quick google search revealed she was far from the first, and it's happened at several different facilities; the Zimbabwan government warns tourists to avoid these. Maybe participants are candidates for Darwin awards, but if you know anybody planning a trip to Africa, please warn them about the dangers of these places! - LB

ECM investigation reveals record of deaths, prior injuries from "lion walks," Africa's latest tourism attractions

May 7, 2011 (Rancho San Diego) Updated May 8, 2011: --A lion attack near Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe has injured Rancho San Diego resident Colleen Garbaczewski. Garbaczewski, an executive with Pacific Coast Rentals and active community volunteer, had taken a “lion walk” with her husband when the attack occurred.

An East County Magazine investigation reveals that lion walks, in which tourists are encouraged to walk alongside and even pet “tame” lions, have resulted in other serious injuries and at least two deaths.

1. Sad.
I feel for the families of idiots that fail to realize that at some point, they need to realize that the food chain doesn't have them at even close to the top.

4. Wait - is a "Lion Walk" what it sounds like?
First - even the ants out there are crazy vicious. Why one would want to leave a perfectly nice Jeep in such a dangerous place is beyond me.

Second - Walking??? With Lions??? Look, you'd be safer walking with Brown Bears. Yeah, the bear would still probably maul you, but unless he just woke up from hibernation, you are not the most appetizing thing for him. The bear likes Salmon Sashimi, heart still beating.

BUT A LION????

17. Yes, it's actually walking with lions, and there are elephant walks too.
Which is probably even more stupid, even how much an elephant weighs. One wrong step and you're squashed!

6. Of course 'lion walks' are dangerous! That's why I limit myself to 'shark swims'
and 'beehive poking' when I go adventuring in the great outdoors...

12. You haven't really lived till you've gone Hippo Hopping...
side note:

I never realized until recently that hippos are considered to be among the most dangerous wild animals in Africa.

9. Sounds like these are mislabeled
"Lion Feeding" rather than "Lion Walks."
