Texas social services chief blunt on severity of cutbacks on children, elderly

By ROBERT T. GARRETT / The Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN –

As lawmakers gear up to hunt for every penny they can use against an unprecedented budget gap, Texas' safety net for the poor and vulnerable figures to get a lot of scrutiny.

The Legislature's Republican leadership will confront weighty questions, such as how many children the state can afford to provide medical care for and what level of care and supervision can be provided for the elderly and disabled.

At lawmakers' elbows will be the chief of state social services, Tom Suehs. He predicts an agonizing process.

"There are not too many nice and easy decisions," he said recently.
"That's why they're going to migrate to cutting some of the optional" services in Medicaid, a health program covering 3.3 million poor children, pregnant women and frail adults.

1. I wonder if we'll see a new diaspora in America
As states adopt policies that push people into poverty and death, many might flee to states more hospitable and humane.

2. my "Xtian"" neighbors at work
they don't deserve to be remotely associated with Christ-who advocated giving all to the poor and the sick.

3. Still it always puzzled me that he called Peter away from
providing for his wife and children with income from the fish he caught. Did his wife take up fishing? Was her or his parents obligated to provide for them? Did he send a portion of contributions home to sustain them or did the richest NEW Christians take up fundraising for the benefit of the apostles' families when they quit work to go spread the Gospel.

4. good point.
Despite what you may hear from the Right - Christianity ain't perfect-especially as it has been translated. There are beneficial aspects that most who consider themselves "Liberal Christians" find helpful in their daily lives.
"Love your neighbors...all of them"...paraphrased,of course

5. They seem to believe that children and the elderly should be relying on their own families
and their own churches. That'as their excuse, anyway.
