USA Today/Gallup poll: Former Freddie Mac lobbyist Newt Gingrich leads Republican field

by Jed Lewison

Gallup for USA Today. November 13-17. Republicans and Republican-leaning registered voters. ±4%. (No trend.)
    Newt Gingrich: 22
    Mitt Romney: 21
    Herman Cain: 16
    Ron Paul: 9
    Rick Perry: 8
    Michele Bachmann: 4
    Jon Huntsman: 1
    Rick Santorum: 1
Newt Gingrich as flavor-of-the-month is old news, but this poll provides yet more validation to that storyline. Previously, Gallup didn't report results from registered voters only, so if you want to compare trends, you have to look at the numbers without screening for registered voter status. (Presumably, if you're not a registered voter, you're very unlikely to vote in the primary, but the numbers aren't that different from the screened ones.) With that said, here's the trend:

That chart looks as crazy as Bachmann.

1. They so don't want to vote for Mittens
It's incredible the way the polls prop up these people and then the next scandal comes and tears them down again. None of them are any good

2. There is something really FU'd having Newt in the lead.
It not only shows the pubs have no sense, but also that they have amnesia.

4. Yay for Mr. Newton Leroy Gingrich
I hope he gets the nom and we have a guy who favors ending child labor laws, who wants to end the separation between church and state, and who thinks the President is a former Kenyan Mau-mau debating Barack Obama. There'll be so many bizarre quotes coming out of that debate, we won't be able to keep up.
