Does anyone here think Nancy Pelosi is a sellout?
It's odd that so many people are a step shy of calling for the President to be tarred and feathered over this deal, as if he negotiated it unilaterally with Boehner and McConnell, without any input from Congressional Dems.

But Democratic leadership not only were in the loop, they were in the room and SIGNED OFF ON THE DEAL!

Nancy Pelosi is no fool and she's no sellout or capitulator. I have every reason to believe that if she signed off on this deal, it was because she knew that it was the best deal we could exact.

I realize that many here think the President is weak, but is Nancy Pelosi also seen as a pushover?

I know it's more convenient to simply trash the President as if he's some kind of weak, inept dolt - or, depending on the mindset, a callous, manipulating Trojan horse - but the reality is that he was dealing with an intractable, unreasonable, reckless opponent with a doomsday deadline hanging over us and had to make a deal to stave off a catastrophe. While people sitting on the sidelines have the luxury and convenience to critique and condemn, the President had to actually get something done.

And the fact that Pelosi was in there with him and approved the deal speaks volumes to me. If anyone thinks Obama sold us out, they must believe that Nancy Pelosi is complicit in the betrayal.

And that dog just won't hunt.

2. Imagine what's going to happen when the vote passes ....
I wonder which Senate and House Democratic members will receive similar anger.

3. You know it's time to stop defending Barack Obama on everything. He has proved to be
no negotiator and somebody unwilling to stand up for principles. He gives in too readily. He needed to take bold action. But that is not his style.

4. Here at DU no one is exempt from being chucked under the bus.
Daily. I've seen people throw Nancy under the bus before and they will do so again. In this particular case though, Obama is a much bigger target. After all, why should he be constrained by democrats, republicans, tea partiers, the Supreme Court, or any other group or power. All he has to do is issue fiats and it's done. Therefore all blame is Obama's. :sarcasm:

6. But he's only supposed to be a steely-eyed dictator to force through things we LIKE
If he does it on anything else, he's a power-hungry, anti-Democratic despot.

5. There is not much Nancy can do when the President puts everything on the table.
To Nancy's credit, her voice was heard when Social Security, Medicaid and other low-impact programs were not part of the trigger.

7. Lol - do you realize how inconsistent you're being?
Edited on Mon Aug-01-11 08:41 AM by EffieBlack
Pelosi was powerless against the President of her own party because he put "everything on the table" ... But you think the President is weak because he didn't exact all manner of concessions from a group of people intent on blowing up the economy.

8. she hasn't stood up to Obama on anything
the one exception that I know of is the detainee photos, but those never got released anyway.

She didn't go to the signing statement for the Bush tax cuts she signed off on, but what good does that do anyone?

11. I understand
I don't agree with you, but I understand.

But why, if people feel this way, is only President Obama taking all of the heat? Shouldn't some of the frustration and angst be shared by Democratic leadership?

12. Well, he is the president
so it's expected that he takes most of the blame.

I feel I've been fair in at least blaming Congress and Obama equally. I think our DEM leadership has been weak since even before Obama took over. I think they are the bigger problem.

13. Those who think Pelosi is a pushover must also think
that Dick Durbin, Charles Schumer, and some others are pushovers also.
