ABC/Washpo poll: Romney 49% - Obama 46%
among registered voters.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/obama-loses-bin-laden-bounce-romney-on-the-move-among-gop-contenders/2011/06/06/AGT5wiKH_story.html

Can't say I'm surprised, Obama has been very bad at developing a message, sticking too it, and conveying it to the American people. Too much compromising and vacillating and letting the Republicans (and even some congressional Dems) run all over him, and not enough strong leadership from the President. Examples: health care, not getting a big enough stimulus, both of which happened with strong Democratic majorities in the House and Senate

I will be voting for Obama. But it's looking bleak.

22. This is a desperate gambit to *make* Romney the candidate
Everybody else loses in a landslide. The corporate R's problem is that their nutso allies in the conservative base won't vote in the primaries for the only guy with an outside shot: Romney. So, they start floating this kind of stuff in a desperate attempt to get him through the primaries in one piece.

But it doesn't fit your negative narrative.

Has any president with a 50% approval rating ever lost reelection? Of course not. You know this. So it suggests the ABC Poll might just, you know, be one poll and wrong. There are polls that occasionally don't line up with the other ones.

Why should I believe this ABC poll until another supports its claim? Better question, why do you?

80. Doesn't happen with Presidents in any significant numbers
The better point is that you can't compare approval rating in one poll to vote preference in another poll. I'd like to see the crosstabs for ABC's poll and what they came up with for approval rating, but they won't release that info obviously.

21. More bullshit from the "liberal" media.
First of all, Obama's bin Laden bounce has not "dissipated." Based on polling from yesterday, Obama's approval rating was 50% on Gallup, which is only one or two points from where it was after the killing of bin Laden. Second, Clinton was losing to Bob Dole by a much larger margin back in 1995. And guess what? He won by a landslide the following year. This is just more propaganda by the corporate media to try to convince people to vote for Romney, or whatever idiot is picked to run against Obama. To tell you the truth, I'd rather swim through ten miles of raw sewage than have Mitt Romney as president.

RW-friendly of the more "reputable" news sources, IMO. And that poll is an outlier out of what's been put out thus far.

But as has been pointed out, it's way too early to determine who's trending up or down.

33. Anything could happen. Who knows,
Romney could be the GOP nominee and voters could be fooled again, but he isn't yet and the election is more than 16 months away.

The interesting thing is that the poll shows the rest of the GOP field trailing badly (though the numbers for Palin and Bachmann seem too high).

LOL, have you never read or paid attention to polls before? That too, a poll conducted 17 months before the election? Before the primaries have even concluded?

Romney is the GOP front runner, by default but he hasn't even gone through the GOP ringer. The other republicans haven't even really even begun trashing him over the healthcare bill in MA, not to mention his changing views on just about every social issue, becoming a radical conservative after he realized being viewed as a moderate would kill him in '08.

I have yet to see a poll where any GOP candidates crack 50% against Obama. He'll be re-elected. If the electorate is unhappy it is more likely to be reflected in the House and Senate.

66. You're missing a few things -
Liiiiiiiiike, for instance, that Romney is a "False Christian" to many TeaHadists . . .

or that the Democrats have learned their Kerry lessons and are now relentless campaigners. All they need to do is the following:

a) hit Romney hard on his position reversals and lack of a serious economic plan .. . .

b) remind voters of their Fascist govs and their sodomic agenda, which every RepubliCON candidate supports . . .

c) remind voters of Paul Ryan . . .

d) remind voters of WHO CAUSED THIS MESS!!!

I mean, does America REALLY hate Obama THAT bad that they would elect the same agenda the Fascist Govs are doing; you know, the one that got us into this mess in the first place, only suckier? Does America REALLY want that for the country? Is America THAT phenomenally stupid to blame Obama for it's 30-year Republicanomic fisting?

It reminds him of the point at which he went 17 up against Bush en route to a landslide victory. Similarly, Presidents Mondale, Dole and McCain also recall with great fondness the watershed moment they went up against their respective opponents, never to be pegged back.

Obama leads all potential Republican challengers by double-digit margins. He is ahead of his closest Republican rival, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, by 13 percentage points -- 51 percent to 38 percent.

A day, a month, a year...that's an eternity in politics. From minute to minute, day to day, events occur and alter the political landscape. John Kerry was leading Dumbya Bush in the last week of the 2004 Election. Then we got the bin Laden tape and it turned things around just like that.

Polls don't mean shit right now. Don't sweat it.

77. Considering it's the only poll that gives Romney any kind of edge over Obama
that even exists I'm going to say their methodology is flawed.

81. Interestingly, there is another DU thread with a poll saying exactly the opposite.

Bleak indeed!

The polls I'll be more concerned about will be those at this time next year.

82. Yet another poll has President Obama beating all of their candidates by double digits
link to article

Obama leads all potential Republican challengers by double-digit margins, the poll showed. He is ahead of his closest Republican rival, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, by 13 percentage points -- 51 percent to 38 percent.

The point is that it is very early, the real campaigning hasn't even begun yet. These numbers will change weekly (if not daily).

IMHO, unless President Obama has a serious primary challenge, the economy tanks, or some major disaster happens between now and election day he is very likely to have his second term, and the repub's don't have much of a chance of taking the presidency.

I also predict that we will take the House of Representatives back.

My main area of concern for 2012 is the Senate. That is going to be the real battleground for us. Even under the best of conditions we're extremely unlikely to gain cloture strength, and a very good chance that we will loose our majority... but on a positive note, there's pretty much no chance that the pugs will gain the supermajority either.

85. UPDATE:
Based on polling data that have come out subsequently, this poll appears to be an outlier. Please disregard.

90. Now that I think about this a bit more, this poll is an outlier precisely
due to the excitement of Romney's announcement. It could reflect the impact of the event; in other words, a little bump for him. But, the rest of the polls are showing a different story. Obama is ahead of all his potential Rethug challengers.
