With 11 days to go before the tightly contested midterm elections, the president gives a pep talk to college students, union members and other supporters in California.

President Barack Obama rallied tens of thousands of Democrats in Los Angeles on Friday, saying that even though the nation is still facing tough economic times and they may be frustrated by the pace of change, their votes are vital to ensuring a continued recovery.

"We need all of you to fight on. We need all of you fired up. We need all of you ready to go because in just 11 days, in just 11 days, you have the chance to set the direction of this state and of this country," said Obama, who was jacketless and rolled up his sleeves as he began speaking.

"Just like you did in 2008, you can defy the conventional wisdom," he said. "The conventional wisdom says young people are apathetic. The conventional wisdom says you can't beat the cynicism in politics, that you can't overcome the special interests and all that matters is all the big money and the negative TV ads."
