Snooki-gate: Obama may not have plausible deniablity!
Edited on Thu Jul-29-10 04:04 PM by smalll
So today on The View, Obama denied knowing who Snooki is. However, he mentioned her in his Correspondents' Dinner speech this year.

Some have claimed that Obama may have been telling the truth because it was his speechwriters who put the Snooki reference into the C.D. speech, and Obama merely recited their words.

HOWEVER, video of the Correspondents' Dinner reveals that Obama pronounced Snooki's name correctly. Think about it for a minute. If you saw the name "Snooki" in text, and were not aware of her, wouldn't you read it out to rhyme with Snoopy, rather than with cookie?

Obama can only retain plausible deniability if it is contended that her name was wrtten out for him phonetically in the C.D. speech. The only way he can put this behind him successfully is if the White House releases a true copy of the speech-text that Obama used which proves that the name was written out phonetically. If they can't do that, we have to assume that the President was being less than fully truthful on The View.

Here's video of the C.D. speech -- he mentions Snooki right after 12:00 in the recording. http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2010/05/a_mocking_obama_at_the_white_h.html

3. Yes, someone else writes the jokes - but how did Obama know how to pronounce the name?
Again -- think about finding "Snooki" in a speech you have to read. If you've never heard of her, it would be natural to pronounce it to rhyme with Snoopy, rather than with cookie or bookie. But he pronounced it correctly!

4. Isn't it like snookums. How would you pronounce?!
Tell me you're being sarcastic here. Huh? I think you're reading into it. I didn't know who snooki was when I read of her in France and I pronounced it right. I don't think instinctual you'd pronounce it in the sort of snoopy way. It doesn't matter anyway because her name ends in KI or KIE and one actually would rhyme it with cookie. So I find your post absurd. Lord.

6. Bringing up "snookums" is an interesting idea, but I don't think it goes too far --
Googling "snookums" results in 77,500 hits; but googling "schnookums" results in 96,100 hits.

What I'm getting at is that while "Snooki" does rhyme with "schnookums" or "schnook" it is the presence of the SCH- or SH- that clues one in to pronouncing such words with the short rather than the long "oo" sound. As Snooki's name doesn't have the SH- or SCH- beginning, I would contend that most people, sight unseen, would pronounce the name to rhyme with Snoopy.

It appears in the video that he was reading it off paper rather than using a teleprompter, so there probably is a hard copy that could be accessed.

Double-o words can go either way. You've got at least a 50/50 chance of being right. And in some parts of the country roof is pronounced like more like the oo in book than like the oo in kook.

Your point is a weak one.

He pronounced it correctly in the speech.

How did he know how to do that? That's what I'm asking. Phonetic spelling? Then release a true copy of the speech. You can see in the video, also, that he is reading the speech off paper in front of him - not through a teleprompter -- that hard copy must be available in some form somewhere.

wTF...no, I never would even have considered pronouncing it to rhyme with Snoopy. What an absolutely absurd assumption and premise. Considering I'm not even as smart as Obama...I'm pretty sure it doesn't take rocket science to pronounce that name to rhyme with cookie.
