Top Dem Rep Wants 'Reckless, Renegade' McChrystal To Resign
Justin Elliott | June 22, 2010, 1:18PM

Rep. Dave Obey (D-WI), chair of the House Appropriations Committee, just released this statement calling on Gen. Stanley McChrystal to resign in the harshest terms, and putting him among "a long list of reckless, renegade generals."

Here's the full statement:

"In recent history - which runs from General MacArthur, to General LeMay, to General McChrystal, we have seen a long list of reckless, renegade generals who haven't seemed to understand that their role is to implement policy, not design it.

"General McChrystal's comments are not the first time we've seen a General contemptuous of his civilian superiors. It isn't even the first time we've seen this General be contemptuous.

"But his comments, and those of his subordinates, dismissing the President, the Vice-President, General Jones, Ambassador Eikenberry, and Richard Holbrooke suggests that General McChrystal is locked into an 'everybody is wrong but me' approach to the world.

"When criticizing his civilian counterparts, McChrystal himself said, 'Here's one that covers his flank for the history books.' Pardon me, but I wonder if that doesn't summarize General McChrystal's approach here.

1. I admit, I'm torn about this one. McChrystal gets to walk away from his...
strategy in Afghanistan, and place the blame for it's failure, on his successor? I'm sorry, I think he should be demoted, and made to stick it out, for good or bad. I know I'm in the minority on this, but I think he should be "forced" to see it through, with increased oversight.
