It Always Comes Down to Speeches
I have come to believe for awhile the reason the pundits have been attacking Obama so viciously is because of speeches.
the reason the left is whining about him not leading.
I mean, look at the oil situation. What the hell can the man do other then what he's been doing since the beginning. It's sheer stupidity to expect him to don a divesuit and fix it with bare hands.
I keep hearing the pundits demand he do ....what? they use lead or emotion but, exactly what is it they want him to do?
What is it the left expects him to do.
What does everyone mean exactly with lead? How? No other president has had the same kind of unrelenting demands placed on him since day one.
they compare daily to other presidents and won't let him be Obama or his own president. From the beginning they demand he do grand gestures. Empty but, grand.

I noticed since the campaign that what the media expected of Obama day in and out is for him to do Boston 2004. Regardless of the situation and what things called for.

Before Obama, it was not demanded that presidents exhibit emotions, get all weepy Glenn Beck like, issue empty threats and play tough guy. Be personally involved in every situation and play Daddy in Chief. During Exxon, Bush I was not expected to get all weepy and emotional or personally involved.

Before Obama, it was never expected a president be public in dealing with people. Dignity and behind the doors was the expected way Presidents dealt with people and situations. Not with Obama. he is not allowed to have that same dignity and class and deal with the ugly behind the doors. Dress down and reprimand those who screwed up. Why? Why is he suppose to broadcast everything to the public? Why is he getting vilified for doing as other presidents have done?

Last night was about speaking to the average person who is not a news junkie or into politics. Who want the basics laid out and not alot of detail. They don't want grand - they want information. short and sweet and basic.

I noticed Matthews spewing nasties and wanting obama to use a bullhorn and climb ontop of 9-11 rubble and do bush in a flightsuit. And every beltway heather jumped on the bandwagon and relentlessly bashed this president. Unfairly. You have Howard Dean, a man who understands these things come out and tell them the media is being unfair and creating this discontent. Trying to make it his Katrina.

They do love to portray him during this crisis, as well as the left since the beginning, as weak. Rahm's puppet. or easily led around. No backbone. people mix up being dignified and class with weak. They president, as has been noted, is very sarcastic and tough inside the Oval. he is no weak willed pansy. he is not easily led. He has gone toe to toe with the generals. He has taken on the bankers and made them cringe. he is not a puppet of his employee, Rahm.

The sad part is that we should know better. We are aware of the games pundits play. that information is not usually correct. And yet we have many on the left, since before the swearing in, jump on every rumor and gossip and grumble by the talking heads. They write endlessly of how obama is (insert vile name). then they find out a few days later it was not true. Only to start it all over again a few days later. Sooner or later you'd think they would learn.

The presidency in real life is not like the movies. or teevee. And this president is himself. he is not TR or FDR. he is not Nixon or Hoover or Carter. he is not Clinton or Bush. He is himself. A unique person and fits his own era. He will never be like the other presidents because each is his own person. period.

and every crisis does not call for grand speechifying.

1. Plus when he DOES give a killer speech they act like it's nothing but "telepromter"
Sick of the "reality TV" mentality and craving endless TV moments and drama. We've turned into a nation of children. Maybe the "environmental extremists" who warned about the possibility of this kind of disaster should have been on Jersey Shore and then people would have listened. As it is even after this everyone's all "drill baby drill" even though we will never be energy independent in an oil-based economy.

3. I don't know why your post made me cry.....
probably because I am fed up with the fucking arrogant asswipes who think they fucking know everything about everything, and do nothing but talk shit.

I'm really through with news and bullshit.

We were mostly blessed with this man at the helm,
and most simply stand in line for the pile on and a chance to stomp
on his throat. Do we deserve the leadership he offers? I don't see how.

5. Great post, volvoblue.. Actually,
imv, he was a grand speech last night. It was a commitment to the American People and specifically to calm the fears of those who were most affected by the tragic disaster and in the process he calmed mine for them.
