National Institute of Health Approves 13 Embryonic Stem Cells for Research
New access for researchers begins
By KENDRA MARR | 12/02/09 4:18 PM

Thirteen human embryonic stem cell lines were approved Wednesday for use in government-funded research, the first wave of many that will become available under the Obama administration's new policies to expand researchers' access to stem cells.

In recent years, the White House, Congress and activists have waged an ethics war over whether extracting these prized cells destroys human embryos. Congress twice passed bills to expand federal funding for embryonic stem cells, but President George W. Bush vetoed them both times.

Until recently, federally funded scientists were limited to working with just a handful of cell lines; shortly after taking office, President Obama removed those barriers.

Children's Hospital Boston developed 11 of the newly approved lines and Rockefeller University in New York City developed two, said Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health.

An additional 96 lines have been submitted to NIH for review.

4. 13 whole embronic stem cells
even as they move to basically do away with abortion in the health insurance care bill due to the sacred aspects of the embryo that they're working on in Congress? Stop and think about the irony and malicious contradiction of that a moment or two...

5. Better than the zero we've had under BushCo.
And you're incorrect re: the Stupak Amendment, which is the near equivalent to the existing Hyde Amendment. That
being said, it will be stripped out of the HCR bill, as per Senator Barbara Boxer and Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.
