Are Republicans trying to woo Senator Joseph I. Lieberman?
Mr. Lieberman, a Connecticut independent whom Democrats have counted as one of their own, is the honored guest at a Washington fund-raising dinner that is being hosted by a group of top Republican fund-raisers.
This year, he is not on the ballot. The event, according to an invitation being sent this week to potential contributors, is to benefit his 2012 re-election campaign.
The question, though, is what party Mr. Lieberman will align himself if he decides to ask voters to give him a fifth term in the Senate.
He recently told reporters that he is open to supporting the Republican candidate, Linda McMahon, in the Connecticut Senate race in November. That admission stoked suspicion – and a touch of resentment – from Democratic leaders, considering that Mr. Lieberman is chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and he caucuses with the Democrats.
