25. Several reasons.

1) content-free post/unsupported claim

2) I don't particularly care for Clinton

3) it's not clear AT ALL if she's doing a fantastic/fabulous job

4) wtf is "fanfu_kingtastic"? :o

Anyway, I haven't even unrec'd. I just thought it was sort of ridiculous to ask, "Who would possibly unrec?? This??" (loosely quoted) - as if that post was something worth recommending.

No question she's doing Obama's work and that is very cool to see.

11. While I agree, it's worth noting that she's unlikely to continue to do so for very much longer.
Not for any political reason, but because the SOS job is more of a strain than just about any other in the government, including the presidency - there have been a great many 8-year presidents, but IIRC only one 8-year SOS sine the second world war, and very few who stayed in the job more than 4 years; many not even that long. Clinton has explicitly stated that she won't be staying on as SOS for 8 years even if Obama wins reelection.

I entirely agree that she's done a damn good job ofg it, and is likely to continue doing so for a year or two more, but probably not for much more than that; what she'll do after that is anyone's guess (SCOTU? - I hope not. Relax and start preparing for a 2016 presidential run? - conceivably. The senate again, or a governorship? Another post in the Obama administration, involving less travel? - very possibly. I don't know), as is who will be up to filling the extremely large shoes she will leave behind.

28. The shameful efforts to recognize the coup in Honduras are a huge disappointment.
Edited on Tue May-04-10 10:22 PM by Radical Activist
It was ridiculous for her to make a public appearance with the new foreign minister. I wonder who called the shots on that travesty. This is what I would expect considering the Clintons history of working against socialist governments in Latin America.

One of the reasons I preferred Obama over Clinton in the primary is that he presented an alternative to the hostile, neo-liberal Clinton era approach to Latin American socialist democracies. To see that old policy carried out under Hillary is one of the few deep disappointments I have in Obama's administration.

Otherwise, I have no idea what she's up to other than drumming up fear about Iran.

29. The real question was always where Obama stood on these issues
Like you, I chose him because I didn't like the Clintons' policies and I hoped, given John Kerry's support, that he would be better on foreign policy. I figured their domestic policies would be pretty similar. I also thought Obama would have a longer honeymoon taht the Clintons would. In retrospect, Kerry is the only nominee who definitely would have changed the policy in Latin America. For a brief while, it looked like Kerry and Berman were able to convince Obama not to recognize the coup, but they lost out.

30. He made some encouraging statements during the campaign.
So I don't know whether this is a change of heart on Obama's heart or whether a different SOS would result in a different policy. I can only hope that Hillary's replacement doesn't share those views.

I guess Hillary went rogue all these months and poor little Obama has no say whatsoever in the direction of HIS administration's foreign policy.

How does it feel to realize that the guy you all broke your backs to get nominated is just as much a corporatist and hawkish as the hated (by the left) Clintons?

35. So you think Hillary has absolutely no influence on Obama's foreign policy decisions.
Edited on Thu May-06-10 09:40 AM by Radical Activist
Good to know. I happen to think any SOS has the President's ear and can influence policy.

Obama would have to reverse course and work very hard to be half the corporatist Clinton was. For example, he would have to send Axlerod to help defeat Evo Moralez like Hillary and Bill sent their top consultants. He would have to spend the rest of his term deregulating industry like Bill instead of writing new regulations. He would have to undo the progress on clean energy, mortgage reform, credit card reform, and health care, which were all major failures of the Clinton years. It's kind of embarrassing that the talk radio crowd can always point out how deregulation wasn't all Bush's fault because it always started under Clinton.

Face it. Obama has more progressive accomplishments in two years than Clinton accomplished in eight. It feels good to know we picked the far more competent and effective nominee in the primary.

33. Honduras was lose/lose.
Support an ousted president, contrary to Honduras law, their courts, their congress... and get painted as meddlers.
Support a reconciliation election... and get painted as enablers.

There simply was no possible good outcome. Once Zelaya turned it into a showdown, either he was going to lose, or the rest of their political system would lose.
