Poll question: Should Obama pick a progressive, ''moderate,'' or conservative supreme court justice?
Edited on Wed Apr-14-10 02:46 PM by yurbud
Since the Democrats lost their supermajority in the Senate through disuse, Obama's temptation will be to pick a corporate-friendly milktoast for the open Supreme Court seat.

However, what would he have to lose by appointing an unapologetic corporate giant killer and daring the GOP to filibuster him or her?

Bush did something similar with the appointment of Harriet Myers, the equivalent of appointment a ham sandwich or a dirty gym sock.

The hearings could become a showcase on Citizens United and other special privileges we give corporations, banks, and Wall Street, and force the Republicans to remind people whose side they are really on.

Even if the Republicans successfully filibuster that candidate, Obama could then pick someone a little more edgy than the milktoast or even closet conservatives the Republicans and their fellow travelers in the Democratic Party are pushing him to choose.

What should Obama do?

10. They are not. Just poking a little fun at the absurdness of the question
Its like asking if a guy who shoots left handed for the entire NBA season will suddenly start to shoot right handed in the fourth quarter of the final game.

2. a low grade progressive ...
He will figure out a way to box them out, but the battle that the dems need to be fighting in the summer going into the fall is finance reform, the Rs are CLEARLY on the wrong side of that one, and while I am sure the MSM will do its best to side with the Rs, it is a tough position to be in to defend wall street right now ...

the SC pick can't be a fire breathing lefty, cause that will be down the Rs sweet zone, and the media will hope on board with that in a heart beat ... Gotta pick a solid progressive, but not one that makes it too easy to do the liberal bashing crape ...

I think the right is expecting another strong demographic choice - woman or minority (or both), to box them in again like Sotamayor ...

We will see ...

5. I don't know, it just seems strange to expect that people here will pick anything but "progressive."
Making the poll somewhat superfluous.

13. Guess you haven't been reading the threads on the subject?
There are a lot of names being mentioned here who are not at all progressive. The media's favorite Kagan, for example. And even worse, neocon Chimp loving coal industry whore cASS Sunstein. Who thankfully was NOT on Obama's short list.

6. What he should pick means nothing. What he WILL pick is what matters. Where we
really need someone to the left of Noam Chomsky, I suspect we'll end up with another corporate stooge.
