India's relationship has quietly become one of the most important the United States has
I do think this relationship should be nurtured; if that takes a state dinner, so what? If the Obamas never held one, they'd be criticized for that, too.

Indian PM to be feted by Obama at state visit

By FOSTER KLUG
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- India has watched with wariness as President Barack Obama's administration has lavished attention on rivals Pakistan and China. Now, Obama is trying to ease Indian worries by honoring Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with the first state visit of his presidency.

India will receive Tuesday's elaborate welcome because the relationship quietly has become one of the most important the United States has. It is seen as crucial to the U.S.-led fight against extremists in Pakistan and Afghanistan, as a counterweight to China and as key to efforts to settle world trade and climate change deals.

Bestowing upon Singh the first state visit of Obama's presidency, Burns said, shows the importance the U.S. administration gives to strong ties with India.

Indian officials speak of a seamless transition from the Bush to Obama administration, but they acknowledge that a certain reaffirmation of the relationship is always necessary when a new administration takes power.

The countries are cooperating on defense, energy, education, agriculture, economy and counterterror initiatives.

Sharp differences, however, exist on carbon emissions and whether India should be part of an international agreement setting legally binding limits on its emissions.

1. India has watched with wariness as President Barack Obama's administration has lavished attention on
Don't they mean while BUSH's administration ignored India (another democratic county) to pour money and resources into Pakistan and it's illegal military dictator? Bush's "friends" in the "war on terror" always made me cringe. I think Obama's once again just trying to diplomatically undo more of W's stupidity.

2. This article indicates the Indians liked idiot son. Go figure. But
this state dinner is another attempt at diplomacy by this admin; I think it's the right move.

The Indians deal with China, yet they are wary of them-very complicated relationships that are beyond me, yet I trust that is another reason for this dinner, to assuage India.

5. Don't worry, cheaper labor is coming to a home near you
As we slowly sink there will be plenty of jobs that pay shit from foreign companies. Like the reverse of the last 50 years. The world balances.

7. If anyone watched the Obamas greeting the visiting diplomats in Pittsburg.....
..... one thing was clear, the Obamas plain old genuinely like the Singh's.

Sure, it's ultimately about diplomacy ..... but I believe there's more to it than that.

I was in india few months back and this was opinion of many indian citizens.

I doubt he will get U.S. anything.
