Cuba to amend laws before economic changes' plan
14:11, November 16, 2010

The Cuban government said it is necessary to amend several laws and decrees before implementing a plan of updating the Socialist economic model, the official Granma daily reported on Monday.

The government summarized in a document a seminar in Havana attended by 532 Communist Party leaders on the national debates over "economic and social guidelines."

It also reveals a plan proposed by Cuban leader Raul Castro to reshape the economic model to overcome the economic trouble in Cuba.

During the 4-day meeting, Economy and Planning Minister Marino Murillo cited an example of agricultural cooperatives, which were allowed by the current law, but he noted the law did not recognize cooperatives in industrial or service sectors.

1. The Cuban Parliament’s economic commission

originally announced their intent to end the dual currency system 30 months ago : http://havanajournal.com/business/entry/cuba-to-eliminate-dual-peso-currency-system-as-quickly-as-possible/

The system , which I believe to have been in place since 2004 , has successfully acted to help protect Cuba's foreign currency reserves. Ending the system will inevitably lead to some strife as was the case with the closest analogy I can think of : removal of the Berlin Wall which sounded the death knell of the Mark / Deutch Mark situation with respect to East Germany.

2. That was before the market crash that put a big dent in their economy.
:hi:

What Cubans need are cuts in social infrastructure and a nice fat tax cut for the super rich. :sarcasm:
