one of those disappointments
so I ran into a friend of mine I hadn't seen in a while last night. cute chick, really intelligent, graphic designer, working on her post grad. one of those real go getters, you know? we hadn't really spoken in some time, easily 4-5months or so.

so we were talking briefly and politics came up and she said two things that made me wanna pull a michael corleone "you're dead to me" moment.

one, she said she wanted huckabee to win.

the second, she said obama was a muslim.

I was like, well I supported joe biden, but the muslim thing isn't true about obama. she didn't even know who joe biden was.

honestly, its not exactly biden news, but it really does represent the depth of ignorance we're up against. when people who you'd expect to have some common sense and turn out to be living in the dark ages, it really gives those forehead slapping moments

1. that must have been painful
I wish every voter had to pass some sort of candidate-knowledge test before they could vote. So they weren't just voting for the black guy, the white woman, the cute lawyer guy, the war hero, the preacher, the Mormon, etc. You shouldn't be able to vote AGAINST Joe Biden if you don't even know who he is.

Sigh.

2. its really bad here
central washington state is one of the reddest spots in the western united states.

one of my friends is a broadcaster and I saw her out and we were joking about the fact romney was leading mccain here for a long time.

AFTER he'd already dropped out.

I have friends who are republicans but they tend to be the Goldwater type, you know. "I'm a republican but goddamn george bush is an idiot. we need to get out of that crap in iraq and just let them kill each other off." that kinda thing.

the friend who liked huckabee didn't even know about his being a radical religious nut, the whole rattlesnake handling and all that. it illustrates the pains republicans are going to go to to keep the insanity of their party from the spotlight.

3. I didn't know that's where you were!
My nephew is thinking about going to Central and I have concerns since he's leaning toward McCain and even mentioned ROTC! My niece survived it, but I'd rather see Sean go to U Dub.

Anyway, we can thank our media for people not knowing who Joe Biden is, and those people who weren't interested enough to pay attention to the debates and the race. In all fairness to them, though - they DID begin so early and people weren't ready to think about the process yet. At times I find myself being irrationally mad at Obama for choosing to run at this time, and sucking all the air out of anyone but the Stars. Ashamed to admit it, but true.

I have no doubt that IF Joe would have gotten exposure that he would have appealed to those folks in central WA, too. But...

And I continue to be shocked that that Muslim thing still has legs. On one hand you almost think these people will get what they deserve, but on the other, WE'D be suffering too!

I wonder, if Obama DOES become POTUS if we'll still keep hearing that.

You need to move to Seattle. Although, not sure how many there could I.D. Joe, either. :grrr:

4. Central blows
and I went to UW, so I do miss seattle. but it is a bit "greeny" there. but not as bad as portland.

a good way to sum it up is when a lot of people were for kucinich, I was and still am a Deaniac.

its a shame that the progressives will flock to kucinich who has a worse history on women's rights than biden, whos got one of the best records in congressional history on equal rights.

eastern washington is a hole, theres no economic advancement here and a conservative mindset to boot. somehow those seem to go hand in hand that as the businesses crumble, the more conservative the region was.

6. You know, we can also
blame the writer's strike for the way the campaign has gone. The nightly political satire really does contribute to the dialogue and often brings to the surface things that a lot of people overlook. I think the campaign could have looked a lot different if television writers had been active. I wish they'd have held off until after the primaries.
