President praying for Richard Holbrooke's recovery
December 12, 2010

Several senior U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, visited Ambassador Richard Holbrooke in hospital on Saturday.

Among those who have visited him is Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) Admiral Michael Mullen and U.S. National Security Advisor Thomas Donilon.

Also on Saturday, President Barack Obama spoke with Holbrooke’s wife Kati and told her that he and First Lady Michelle Obama are praying for Richard.

“Richard Holbrooke is a towering figure in American foreign policy, a critical member of my Afghanistan and Pakistan team, and a tireless public servant who has won the admiration of the American people and people around the world,” Obama said.

2. My thoughts are with him, as well
I respect Ambassador Holbrooke greatly, and learned a lot about him when we were involved with Wesley Clark's campaign in 2004.

But I also want to send wishes to his wife, the journalist Kati Marton, whose book The Great Escape
I hope things go well.

13. Yes ...
Interestingly, this was discussed around the Clark offices in New Hampshire during the primaries there. Jennings gave some awful press or something to Clark, and it was surmised it was because of Clark's relationship during the whole Dayton Peace Accords to Holbrooke, who sort of stole his wife away. Ah, it's all such a soap opera out there.

At any rate, poor Jennings is gone, and Holbrooke is in critical condition now. So I thought I'd say how much I admired the wife (or at least her book).

not the time to cut him down -- he is widely admired, especially since his work in Bosnia

9. That was sudden. I did not know he was sick.
Holbrooke, 69, was rushed to George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. on Friday after he collapsed on the seventh floor of the U.S. State Department building. He underwent surgery on Saturday to repair a tear in his aorta and remains in a critical condition.

I hope he recovers.

10. Its a very grave operation with low survival statistics.
John Ritter actor died of the same thing. The ambassador has one thing going for him he made it in & out of surgery.
