Ok. If the tax cuts are allowed to expire, and no action passes in the lame duck session
Then Obama may very well end up with making the deficit look better by 2012, and that may be what he intended all along, without "appearing" to want to raise taxes on EVERYBODY to help fix the mess caused by 2 wars and the bank bailout left by bush.

He had to know that Dems, and a lot of republicans, weren't going to like the "compromise" deal, and he may have even prepped Pelosi to lead the rebellion, so that all the taxes would go up, and bring in some revenue.

 Just wondering aloud if this wasn't the plan. After all, who wants to go around pledging to raise taxes on the whole country even when they know it has to be done?

Not even close.

4. Not really altruistic.
I just don't trust a damned thing that is happening in Washington. I think they're all a bunch of crooks who are milking this country, and the taxpayers dry. They're sucking every last drop of life out of everything around them for greed and profit.

Nobody in DC gives a shit if middle class taxpayers (what's left of the middle class) get hit with a new tax bill. They're just going to privatize the rest of our government and screw us even more down the road.

6. Our problem is that none of us have much real information about
what is going on inside. We just have to speculate based on our instincts.

Yep. And that's all this is....speculation. It just looks too much
like the same ol', same ol'. I don't think there is a true "revolution" going on over this. I think they're all pretty much singing from the same page in private.

13. Except letting all the tax cuts expire isn't a 'new' tax bill
It's just the expiration of the reprieve that was a mistake for Bush to have granted in the first place, while creating explosive growth in the deficit through two unfunded wars.*

* yes the real mistake was the two unfunded wars ...

2. The republicans and blue dog dems will use the deficit against him in 2012
There will be no jobs, guaranteed.

Obama will try to make up for the rich tax breaks by robbing from social security, also guaranteed.

Or are they just a personal idea for scare tactics?

15. I agree Crazy Dave
The deficit is not going to go down.

And the Republicans will successfully SKEW this argument that they had NO involvement at all, never met with President Obama, never EVER admit that they had ANYTHING to do with this bill.

Everyone from Morning Joe, to Anderson Cooper, to Rush will then continue to state the same thing "Obama did it all on his own as an Executive Order" - and President Obama takes the blame for the deficit being so high.

19. I can almost hear Limbaugh and Beck now saying every day...
"Even his own base was against the tax breaks for the rich but he said "screw you" to them and now we have an even bigger deficit and unemployment still over 9%!"

21. Exactly
I don't know how many times I've said it here - the Republicans are MASTERS at re-framing what happened or what IS into an entirely new 'story' that supports their Brand. The media buys it because they are better fiction writers.

22. But it won't be fiction this time
Edited on Fri Dec-10-10 03:04 PM by Crazy Dave
He did say screw his base.

The deficit will be higher.

Unemployment will still be above 9%.

One thing Obama has learned from the republicans is fear tactics. The WH speech about going into another recession without tax cuts sounded just like TARP.

help economic recovery, and certainly would be a political loser.

9. I hope our politicians aren't that manipulative.

I would like politicians to say what policies they really plan to do, and try to do what they say.
I can understand, circumstances change, but please explain, before I find out the hard way,
the circumstances, and what can be salvaged of the policies.

It's a sad political environment if people have to resort to such levels of manipulation.

To offset my view, I will say...others may argue opponents are this manipulative, our side must be manipulative too.
It's a very, very sad day, if this is true.

I like to think President Obama didn't plan to fix the deficit this way.

Sounds like that SNL skit where they portrayed Reagan as this scheming mastermind who could speak 6 languages and was actually running the whole administration while his secretaries were portrayed as doddering and old.

14. Balancing The Budget And Raising Taxes In The Midst Of A Recession Is What Herbert Hoover Did
Edited on Fri Dec-10-10 12:49 PM by DemocratSinceBirth
We have a short term problem which is the recession and a long term problem which is the structural deficit. You can't solve the latter before solving the former. It's physically impossible. The defecit is a symptom of the recession and not the cause. It would be like cutting off your head because you have a migraine.

I think two courses should be mandatory to get any college degree- Poli Sci 101 and Economics 101. Then we would be spared this tomfoolery.

23. That's like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer...
because it feels good when you stop. If taxes go up and UI is not extended, the economy is going further down the crapper. How do you think that will play in 2012?
