President Obama to award George H.W. Bush the Presidential Medal of Freedom

By Kenneth R. Bazinet
White House Correspondent

Wednesday, November 17th 2010, 9:29 PM

President Obama dropped a bipartisan bombshell today, announcing he will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom next year to ex-President George H.W. Bush.

The magnanimous gesture of bestowing the nation’s highest civilian honor to the 41st U.S. President came a day after ex-President George W. Bush gave a respectful nod to Obama at the groundbreaking of his library in Dallas.

“The decisions of governing are on another President’s desk, and he deserves to make them without criticism from me,” Bush said at the site of his future library at Southern Methodist University.

NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell, St. Louis (baseball) Hall of Famer Stan Musial, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Wall Street wizard Warren Buffett top the list of scholars, athletes, artists, achievers and do-gooders who will be presented the award at a White House ceremony early next year.

“These outstanding honorees come from a broad range of backgrounds and they’ve excelled in a broad range of fields, but all of them have lived extraordinary lives that have inspired us, enriched our culture, and made our country and our world a better place. I look forward to awarding them this honor,” Obama said.

I couldn't find any other posts on DU about this. Is this maybe some kind of Onion prank?

If it's actually TRUE .. well this shit, how could Obama insult the Left any more than to pull a stunt like this. If true, what
he's actually doing is outing himself to be a complete stooge for the Bush Crime Family.

7. Dems never learn
Did you get a shiver up your leg when Clinton hooked up with Bush Sr. in that Tsunami in Asia? You should have, they were doing 'bizness' in the late 80's, knew each other well.

Its one big boys club, when Obama gets out, he'll be paling around with Bush Jr. in no time. Its one big boys club.

Nader was the man!

Check out the news today, there's Baker and Scowcroft, Poppy's Secretary of State and NSA, supporting Obama on START. Are you against that, too?

This is also a way of reminding the Republicans that they once had a wing of their party called "moderate."

This is smart political theater, and the timing couldn't be better.

You also don't get to "moderate" by being a little more rational (but at least as crooked) than Regan and his piece of shit son.

Poppy is a fucking first magnitude criminal.

15. Shame on Obama and double shame on those who feel that this is unimportant

George W Bush started an ILLEGAL war that directly resulted in the deathes of over 1,000,000 Iraqi citizens. It filled their land with depleted uranium and displaced over 3 million people.

George W Bush CONFESSED to ordering waterboarding, a form of torture.

And, it is NO BIG DEAL if Obama gives him a medal of freedom. It is beyond SHAMEFUL and disgraceful, not to mention against the responsibility of Obama's office to fail to protect and defend America against war criminals. And, now, EH, so what if he hangs a medal of honor around W's neck? No biggie.

There is NOT a defense of this act NOR a defense of the President's failure to protect this country from all enemies, foreign and domestic. Bush is a war criminal and he should be on trial.

Obama is complicit in one of the worst crimes in our history.

I am aghast at the responses I am reading on this thread.

Regarding civil liberties, all the while ignoring the rule of law regarding several known CONFESSED felons.
Nothing surprises me anymore except how easily I believed candidate Obama and how I was duped into working so hard to get him elected.

All there is to say, they will NOT ALLOW any 'good' person in. Republicans don't allow Ron Paul. Anyone who will rock the gravy-train is NOT ALLOWED TO RUN.

As to Bush in 63, he was in TEXAS. Kennedy WAS Ron Paul with the Fed, guess what happend?

34. At least you didn't continue to drink the Kool-aid

I truly can't believe how easily people find it to rationalize the unethical/unprincipled actions of this President.

If a Republican did the same things as Obama, the board would be united.

But, Obama has the D initial after his name, so it can be rationalized away?

I think it is weird that people get so vested in a politician that they lose sight of their principles. It is strange, indeed.

35. Not continuing to drink the Kool-aid is small comfort at this point
I also have become disillusioned with my fellow party members and not just the party leaders.

"If a Republican did the same things as Obama, the board would be united." Indeed he did do those same things and this board was united!
At the time they claimed to oppose these policies but it is clear now they only opposed the "R".

I believe now they never believed in anything at all save for what they view as a sporting event.
We are not winning and this is not a sport but rather human lives lost and creeping assured poverty and loss of liberty for all.

Most were saying that they couldn't believe it. I think people think these things happen so much it just doesn't impress them one way or the other. It is politics as usual and shows the "good ole' boy" network is alive and thriving! I don't know how many have seen the recent JFK “Conspiracy Theory” mini-documentary by Gov. Jesse Ventura but it is really something to see and it is based on facts! Here is a link if you didn't see it and it has a lot of info about H.W. Bush and Lee Harvey Oswalds CIA "handler" who was H.W.'s close friend!
