Kansas Group To Protest At Soldier's Funeral

MARINE CITY, Mich. -- Protesters from a church based in Kansas plan to attend 23-year-old Pfc. Shane Reifert’s funeral Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Marine City.

The Westboro Baptist Church has become known for showing up at soldier’s funerals nationwide to protest. Members have claimed service men and women were killed because “God hates the U.S. for its tolerance of gays.”

Volunteers in the area said they plan to shield Reifert’s family from the protesters. Many of the volunteers said though they do not even know the family, they plan to show up touting American flags.

The Westboro group said in an e-mail:
“Military funerals have become pagan orgies of idolatrous blasphemy, where they pray to the dunghill gods of Sodom and play taps to a fallen fool. This message is to be preached in respectful, lawful proximity to the memorial of Pfc. Shane M. Refert.”
