Democrats want to do the right thing.

What is the right thing to do with this taxcut issue?

Should we extend the taxcuts of the top 2% who have done so miraculously well the last ten to twenty years?

Should we extend it only to those that are making 250K or less per year?

Or should we only extend it to the $100K and less?

To top it off at $250K per year is quite a compromise. That is in the top 5% of all income earners in America. It is not the middle class. Let us not kid ourselves.

What is the right thing to do?

1. What can we actually get passed through Congress seems to be what they are actually focused on
because you can have the perfect policy but if it can't get through the House and Senate then it's not worth much right now.

Everyone keeps focusing on what they want or Obama wants when the issue is what can we get.

2. Can we not get enough Democrats to do the right thing?
Take a side. The middle class or the wealthy?

3. How do we get it through the Senate? We don't have 60 votes.
Just throwing a little reality out there.

8. Well, I'd say it is the way the stupid rules are written and how Republicans have successfully
played the damn game EXCEPT I think people keep avoiding the fact that there are some moderate/conservative Democrats who also want the tax cuts for the top 2% to continue. I think we should be focusing our pressure and outrage there AND at the Republicans who will filibuster anything other then keeping the tax cuts for the rich.

I think we have the same problem we've had ever since the first fight about the Recovery Act - dealing with the reality of what is necessary to get anything through the Senate.

But that's just me ...

If we could pass a Bill only keeping the extension for people making less then $250k, I bet the President would sign it. :)

4. If it can be shown that the economic system moved money to some people
outside of the actual work they did, then it can be shown that is an error in the economic system, and a fix of taxation to correct that redistribution makes sense.

And since it is really easy to compute earned wealth and distributed wealth by a system, higher taxes on top brackets is really easy to justify.

6. The right thing to do would to be to let them all expire.

7. That's why I'm a Democrat.
We fight for the middle and lower economic classes. We're the only major party that does. I still remember that awesome speech Ted Kennedy gave on the floor of the Senate. This defined clearly the difference between repubs and Dems. How the repubs get people of meager means to vote against their own best interests amazes me. It's like they're on a mission from God himself. Anyway, look at this Lion of the Senate, back when the repubs controlled things, talking about a raise in the minimum wage. This is why I am a proud Democrat:

9. The right thing is to let them all expire except the bottom bracket and reinvest that money into our
people and infrastructure.

The further you get from that the less "right" a thing is being done.
