Poll question: Would the location of a sex offender nearby affect your decision about where to live?
Edited on Tue Nov-09-10 10:06 PM by Renew Deal
Sex offenders are todays hot topic besides missles. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=9517043&mesg_id=9517043

Lets assume you were looking at a home to rent or buy. Would the location of a sex offender nearby affect that decision?

7. I can see how you'd say that.
Because a number of people will take an "unpopular" stand. I still think that DU can handle the discussion.

17. I am not so foolish
as to believe that the only sex offenders are the ones listed by Jessica's law. It's the ones you don't know about that are most dangerous. The skillful ones have not been caught. So just keep yourself alert!

3. The registry is terrible. A modern day scarlet letter.
If they're still a risk, keep them locked up. If not and they've paid their dues, leave them alone.

16. Agreed, what Nikki said
What's a sex offender, someone who pees in a grove of bushes or a rapist?

8. I don't have kids...
Maybe if I lived nearby, I'd be able to keep an eye on the offender.

9. Depends on gender.
When I was much younger, I lived across the road from an alcoholic nymphomaniac.

Not a bad gig for a teenager.

10. When I bought my house, I looked at a website that listed the sex offenders
in a given area and what they were convicted of--a house I passed on had more than its share of offenders for a very rural area. One of them would have been my next-door neighbor, in fact. As a woman, I didn't want to be alone at night with other neighbors far away, and pretty much no police protection--would have been too creeped out.

11. We all may be living next to a sex offender and don't know it.

Until they get on a list you don't pay attention. In some states you could be naked in your house and a neighbor can call the police on you. You would be listed as a sex offender.

13. Depends on the circumstances of the offense.
The sex offender registry ruins lives. There are many people on it who are not who most of us would think of as "sex offenders." For example, a teen couple in which one party was slightly older than the legal parameters allowed... I am all for putting pedophiles and serial rapists away for life. But the fact is that the registry includes many other lesser offenses that don't necessarily deserve lifetime stigmatization.

15. If this is a serious question, go to your local county website
look up the location of registered sex-offenders. You may want to move from your present location! Don't forget about the homeless offender that tells the county he lives at a freeway overpass...
