Canadian court strikes down anti-prostitution laws
http://ottawa.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20100928/ontario-anti-prostitution-laws-struck-down-100928/20100928/?hub=OttawaHome

An Ontario court has struck down several key provisions in Canada's anti-prostitution laws, saying they are dangerous to sex-trade workers.

A ruling by the Ontario's Superior Court of Justice said the laws against keeping a common bawdy house, communicating for the purposes of prostitution and living on the avails of the trade "are not in accord with the principles of fundamental justice."

"These laws, individually and together, force prostitutes to choose between their liberty interest and their right to security of the person as protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms," Justice Susan Himel wrote her in 131-page decision which struck down those provisions.

"I find that the danger faced by prostitutes greatly outweighs any harm which may be faced by the public."

I say good.

1. I agree with you...
It's not like prohibiting prostitution has done anything to tamp down supply of and demand for prostitutes. (See also: pot, legalisation thereof.)

2. Like George Carlin says;
Edited on Tue Sep-28-10 04:21 PM by RC
"Another women's issue, prostitution. I do not understand why prostitution is illegal. Why should prostitution be illegal. Selling is legal. Fucking is legal. Why isn't selling fucking legal? You know, why should it be illegal to sell something that's perfectly legal to give away. I can't follow the logic on that at all. Of all the things you can do to a person, giving someone an orgasm is hardly the worst thing in the world. In the army they give you a medal for spraying napalm on people. Civilian life, you go to jail for giving someone an orgasm. Maybe I'm not supposed to understand it."

6. They need a few moments to collect themselves after again checking out the hooker/teacher vid.
Edited on Tue Sep-28-10 04:35 PM by blondeatlast
They'll need a few moments after that for the lingering rush of righteous. pearl-clutching indignation that follows.

That should take another 15 minutes, at least, then time for a shower as well.

9. That's not what I meant...
I don't think.

(I think at least one of the pearl-clutchers might be enjoying h/t's video a little too much, you see?)

7. It's pretty disrespectful to women....
...to be against prostitution, in my opinion. These women work hard for their money just like anyone else who works in a trade.

12. If they freely chose it, I'd support them
I don't think you've ever actually known a prostitute. Just a guess, but probably a good one.

13. freedom is the absense of coersion,
And yes, I used to work with victims of the sex trade and human trafficking - so I don't tend to entertain much libertarian bullshit on the subject.

14. Every hooker I met says the same thing
The convention business is the brass tacks of working on the street, but they far prefer GOP political conventions over Democratic ones.

First, the men are older, less able, and more likely to prematurely ejaculate. That means more business, less wear and tear.
Next, some of the guys simply get on their knees and pray, then, over pay and overtip them, and leave.
Lastly, not only is demand higher, but the tips are huge.

I guess guilt does that to the GOPers.

(I've met them on the job, just so you know).

16. Great, if YOUR daughter is arrested for it...
...you can tell us how relieved you are that she now has a criminal record and is in prison! How more FREE she is this way!

10. Indeed, it is "prudish" to object to the violent exploitation of women
Edited on Tue Sep-28-10 04:55 PM by Sen. Walter Sobchak
It is offensive that the proponents of prostitution around here base their opinion on such a narrow glamorized part of sex trade and then apply it universally as the sound basis of a policy. "Well call girls and brothels look pretty good on HBO and Showtime, what's the problem?"
