25. I don't think it's demeaning
In fact, isn't the whole point that while imagination is a perfectly wonderful thing for children to use in their play, it's utterly inappropriate to base one's politics on fantasy?

As for giving them too much credit, there's a variant that adds, "... and morons who didn't realize they got a tax cut."

even you said so yourself....'wonderful thing for CHILDREN.' Not 'little girls.' It's sexist language. See post #36.

I realize Sexism is low on the list current 'progressives' but we are over half the population and if it weren't for women voters, Dems would NOT be in office. So a tad of respect, please.

69. That wasn't an assumption, it was an observation. I didn't say, "little boys shouldn't
have tea parties" or "little boys shouldn't be encouraged to participate in tea parties"; they just don't do it, probably because of the disgusting-looking tea sets that are marketed. Kids of both genders will play with brightly colored or neutral colored dishes, but the minute the word "tea" comes up or anything girly-looking comes out, the boys disengage at warp speed. That's why there's cream-colored dishes and a ton of fake food in our playroom.

Guess I should :hide: too, since feminist analysis of language gets a real bad reaction. but........

The glee in using feminine activity as an ultimate insult troubles me. "Douche" is another example of the cultural glee phenomenon.

For comparison, imagine insult memes involving ...ohh.. Little League players, football (hrmm, perhaps the insult could be based on politics being played like a violent, unintellectual sport... ?), some MALE activity....

hard to even come up with one, at least one that would be widely trivialized and ridiculed!

36. I agreed with you down
the thread. I responded before reading the entire thread...an experiment of sorts. With my post, only 4 posters noted the sexist crap. 'Little girls' should be replaced by 'little children' or 'little rabbits' or 'Mad Hatters.'

I'm so glad I'm not a little girl today. As an aside: on one of the major TV networks, there is a show about bosses/CEOs infiltrating the working ranks (the peons, serfs, worker bees) to see what they're doing. As a promo for an Extermination Company, the CEO is shown under a home and spotted a rat and he says: "I'm gonna screw that like a little girl."

I was simply aghast. I emailed the network and the company. NO RESPONSE. This promo aired time and time again.

It's a f*cking mean world out there. Six year-old cheerleaders taught to shake their asses and be 'sexy' while chanting a totally inappropriate and demeaning song. All the sexed-up clothes for little girls. Putting them in bras at the age of 6.

No, thankfully I don't have any daughters that would have to endure this treatment. And if someone has the guts to stand up for the 'little girls,' they're told to 'f*ck off,' 'go away,' or are simply ignored.

Mean, cruel world for little girls...the butt of demeaning and cruel jokes.

I hope the Posters who thought this was so fucking funny don't have daughters.

51. It's gotten so bad....
MSM wants girls and women to be 100% sexualized. As I said, I'm so grateful I don't have a little girl today.

FYI: Disney has a horrid reputation of misogyny. Look at all their movies...there are NEVER any mothers, if there are they are killed or taken away (Bambi, Jumbo). And if there is a mother, she is horrid (Cinderella).

Lots of writings on this if you want to google. I found the research fascinating. Walt didn't like women much.

'Bambi.' I was totally traumatized. My parents were divorced and I lived w/ my mother. My father had remarried and my step-mother was insane.

I couldn't believe that Bambi's mother was dead. I had nightmares for months. Bambi was stuck with his dad.

Not until I was an adult did I see what Walt was doing. Bad Walt.

And that the possibility is, they are missing a wonderful part of their life?

And it shouldn't take a tragedy like loosing their better half for them to realize it.

107. possible, but I kind of doubt it. Female characters are just "Not Interesting".
Writers prefer to write for male characters; their concept of femaleness is very limited and 2-dimensional.

That's why it's quite common to see stories where the mother is dispensed with early in the game. Female characters with speaking roles are limited to one "good" woman (the male star's romantic interest, usually), and one bad woman. I'm not talking about just Disney animations either. It's visible in most programming.

116. Point of view.
I think good writers, be they male or female, writer to the largest possible audience. The better they are at their craft, the better the product. In either case, their point of view is open to interpretation and criticism.

Writing reflects the era and the roles of the subjects the writer portrays. The more conservative or progressive the bias of the writer, the more appeal it may have to sympathetic public who share those ideals.

It's not as though family values are less conflicted today as say the sixties and seventies during the progressive wave of the Feminist Movement, the Civil Rights Movement and the Peace Movement. They can't be viewed in isolation as one supported the other. And what came out from that revolution of ideas and ideals is the art of that society.

I don't believe killing motherhood or the end of the family was the message. Any more than female roles can be simplified into the categories of good or bad as reflected in their relationship to a male lead. I can recall the shock of the AIDS crisis and the opening of the closet door. Rock Hudson put a few things into prospective. I don't think he's responsible for the death of motherhood or marriage either.

Yet, we will find a large part of our culture defined by their conservatism who see it other wise. In the long run, as the media is the message, the culture is the art, what message are we sending if we've lost our sense of humor?

If we define the relationship of the family in either or terms, the message conveyed limits the options within the roles. IMHO. I see no reason why little girls can't have tea parties and do the math too. After all, that's what their mother's fought very hard for and their mother's before them.

Thanks for your insight. And by the way, Godzilla was female.

118. I agree, little girls can do girly things and math if they like, or Literature....
they can excel and are worth of respect. but the misogyny-culture does not recognize that.

As for writers, true all art is open to interpretation....my personal critique is a general seemingly innate neglect of female excellence and diversity of interest.

Interestingly, I came across an article yesterday about an Esquire article noting an increase in misogyny among young men. (I don't have the link--you'd have to Google it.) I find that entirely believable--have a look at most comments sections to online news and articles, for example, or YouTube and you will see a lot of gratuitous nastiness to females. It's very weird and depressing, particularly if you ARE a female! (Because it's not happening directly to men, I often wonder if males can notice it or truly care about it...yes I know many do, the question is for contemplation. Or brooding perhaps, would be a better word.)

Anyway, my perspective on this has nothing to do with the position of marriage or motherhood in the cultural mind. I am concerned about the devaluation of females, the positioning of femininity as something so contemptible. Motherhood seems in no danger, to me; from my perspective, it seems to be one of the few roles that is socially rather sacred.

Well, gotta cut off this stream of thought and get running along.....

Long Live Godzilla!! (I had a giant Harley I named Godzilla! She had a lilac colored gas tank.)

It makes me want to scream. The misogyny is thick...it's everywhere, and the obtuseness, or blatant hostility that you get when bringing it up is scary. We get frustrated here at DU, but it's 1000 times worse on other sites.

I JUST saw an article on Care2, citing an Esquire article on the increased sexism among younger men. The comments were telling, as you might guess. Have a look at ANY of the articles filed under "Women's Rights" and you'll see the same thing.

I commented just ahead of you too, #28

115. I can't keep my numbers straight on
threads. Sexism...the last 'ism.' I have to actually curtail my reading of sexist crap...it's so depressing that our world has turned into such a miasma of meanness and cruelty.

The Patriarchy has ruined the planet. Mother Nature will have the last say. No one is stronger than she.

I've noticed that the younger dudes are oblivious to anyone but themselves. I'm so glad I'm not young.

I'm sure it's much worse on other sites....I won't go there. I figure I have somewhat of a chance at making some points here.

Hope you're having a good weekend. I'm looking forward to fall...my favorite season, but with climate change the trees are going from green to brown. We had so little rain this summer....and so damn hot.

Some were offended by the "little girl", but I can see beyond the stereotype and will relate it with the myth.

It fits with Sara at the helm!

34. I wish it had said:
'Tea Parties are for LITTLE CHILDREN with imaginary friends,' but since sexist language is back with a vengeance, I guess my comment will be ridiculed.

I didn't read through the comments, but I will. I wonder if anyone else even noticed how 'little girls' are used as the worst thing to be. After all the worst thing to call a male, is a 'girl' or sissie (from sister) or wuss (combo of woman and pussy).

The problem is that it uses 'little girls' as a negative to ridicule political opponents, and that seems blatantly obvious--and wrong.

64. Protect her by
encouraging her bravery and courage. One needs to be able to stand up for oneself and not care what others think. It's difficult to fight that 24/7 MSM telling girls/women what to be, what to wear, what to do. It's propaganda, really.

Your granddaughter is very lucky to have you.

78. While I admit to finding a great deal of HOW you say things insulting
I none the less agree with you most of the time on the base content.

It should say children, not little girls.

However, we are trying to point things out to tea baggers... not the brightest bunch, sexist as it is, it is sad in a way their pea brains can understand... one hopes.

And do you REALLY think you were better off when you were a kid as compared to now? really?

That no one even flinches at the idea of someone like Hilary running for president now a days.

When I was a kid, that really seemed impossible!
That you'd have a female at the head of HP (whether or not she was horrid at her job ) was truly inconceivable when we were kids.

As a kid and when I was babysitting, i've been to my share of tea parties, and there's nothing what so ever wrong with them. (putting aside that they are in themselves sexist, as the girl is the one expected to prepare and serve)

85. REALLY....and who says that
Edited on Sat Sep-18-10 04:42 PM by femrap
back when I was a child, I didn't want to be more than a nurse or school teacher. There were lots of 'rebellious girls' in my day. The Pill had been introduced. The Women's Movement was on TV...I thought the world was my oyster.

When I hit college, very few of my friends wore makeup or joined sororities. Unisex dressing was the fashion. You couldn't tell the girls from the boys from the back. Men were more aware then than today. Vietnam was raging and all the boys wanted Peace...and especially didn't want to be drafted. That men were becoming 'feminized' scared the shit out of the establishment. We all smoked pot and were mellow. Today...there are lots of violent drunks on campus.

Of course, we had a good educational system (K to 12) back then. Today, it sucks. Everything has been dumbed down.

Today MSM is 24/7 on what women should wear, should eat, should clean, should be, should think. I became an adult at a great time in history for women. Then came Raygun and Murdoch and all of the 'what's important in not on the outside, but the inside' was over. It's so disheartening to see young women today...wearing stilettos, lots of cleavage, globs of makeup. It's as if the Women's Movement didn't even happen.

Hell, we even had all the Strip Clubs closed. Women were respected. Not now. Just see the past prez primary. I had no idea that women were hated so much.

FYI, I got a masters degree in Industrial Engineering. I changed careers after 5 years and worked in investment banking. No, I was not going to be a nurse or teacher....not that there is anything wrong with that but those jobs at the time were completely Pink Collar. I don't like blood and I don't have the patience for children.

I'm an old Women's Libber....that was the derogatory term for us. And I wouldn't want to be young today for all the 'tea' in China. Have you ever looked at the sexed-up clothes for 'little girls' at Walmart?

ETA: I never had a tea party as a child. I saw what my aunts had to do for their husbands...constant cooking and washing dishes. This did not appeal to me. No way did I want a tea party. I lived out in the country on a farm...no tea parties, please.

102. then i'd say you had an exceptional upbringing
and had a far better shake than most young women.
i agree, all girls and women should have had your opportunities.
I also agree the the sexification of kids is horrible.

they are combating teaching girls and women to independent and successful (the hard route) with the easy route (be a good mindless wife, or slut, then shaming the girls who go the easy route)

the trick, of course, is to keep up on educating girls, and boys, making sure they both understand that gender is no deterrent to success, or personal dreams, and NOT to teach either that one gender is superior or inferior to the other.

all of which I don't doubt you already know.

114. I really had
no opportunities at all except for the era in which I lived. I was one of the first generations raised by a single mother. I wasn't allowed to go to certain homes because my mother was a divorcee.

I was lucky that I loved school. I loved gaining knowledge. Every day was new. Everyone was optimistic. I got to see The Beatles for $5 at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. My mother let me be adventurous.

When it came time for college, there were abundant resources available...I got the maximum scholarship, a grant (because we were poor) and a Fed loan at 3%. I would pick up my three checks at the beginning of each quarter and pay my tuition leaving me $10/week for food. Mom sent me $5/week for a carton of cigarettes (bad....I quit years ago).

I was quite the entrepreneur....bought a pound of pot and smoked for free. Sold the rest which financed my yearly Spring Break trip to FL with friends. I thought I was rich!!!

It's very difficult today. The economy is looking into an abyss that may surpass 1929. I'm not hopeful in the least...except that I hope the Mayan and Hopi calendars are correct and there is a massive change 12-21-12 when the paradigm changes from competition to cooperation.

Maybe Mother Nature will finally shake the greedy and cruel off the planet when she tilts on her axis. A comeuppance of some kind is headed our way. I just want to stay out of its way as much as possible. The Patriarchy has simply ruined everything.

Since 1980, the US has sucked. This country is cruel to little girls and once a woman is over 50, she is invisible...I should rob a bank! lol.

You're kind to correspond with me. :hi:

121. I enjoy a good discussion
My (paternal) grandmother was a single mother during the depression. She was a nurse.
She had so many children die...

anyway, she married my grand father (died before I was born, dad was a miracle baby in many ways) and raised me for a few years when dad was out of town.

My maternal grandmother raised my mother single, because her (very ex) husband ran out on her n mom. She married my granddad (died when i was 3) and he's the person mom see's as "dad", and I remember as grandpa.

I grew up with both my grandmothers living alone (relatively speaking, grandma Ora was always taking care of someone - I swear that woman was saint, and arrived on heaven's doors with her sleeves rolled up - I'm so proud of her as a person)

My grandmothers were a kind of study in differences... I loved them both dearly, and miss them so much.

My maternal grandmother was a bit passive. very loving and always upbeat, but I fear her accepting nature causer her undue pain (rheumatoid arthritis crippled her before i was born). She died last year. Her decades of pain finally over. I miss her. She was such a bright source of light and joy. She always brought even a tiny amount of joy to those around her. She was a goldsmith, a poet, and knew how to use a computer (mac) before I did. I am probably a geek because of her.

My paternal grandmother never, ever, settled. She stood up to me more than a few times as i was a pain of a teenager at times (thus normalish). I learned so much form her about life, strength, (cooking and sewing too ^_^) and when to stand up for yourself!

Both were very religious (personal, not bible thumpy) and believed in god to give them strength. I guess the major difference is that Grandma Ora never took that to mean to stand aside passively. Gran was a red head, and wicked strong all her life. She died from a stroke. She "died" almost immediately, her body...true to form, took a little while longer to go. But the doctors assured us brain death was almost immediate.

So that's a little on my family's background. "Normal" simply doesn't exist in my family's vocabulary. Sadly, "married for life" also doesn't seem to be there either. (One of my uncles and my beloved aunt the exception to that rule)

Thank you for reading ^_^,
writing this was very emotional for me, as I miss them terribly.

122. Your grandmothers sound
wonderful. Mine have been gone for many years. The paternal grandmother was a bible-thumping hypocrite and paid for that late in life. She didn't deserve to have all those strokes and then to endure years living with my horrid stepmother though. Her name was Birdie and that's what I called her...she did love to travel and she loved to play games and entertain. So her and my grandfather's house was often full of people playing cards and eating great home cooked meals. She fixed the best fried chicken. I never eat fried chicken....nothing can compare to hers.

My maternal grandmother married a farmer and therefore had to have lots of children. She had five. I can't imagine how sad it would be to want children and having them die. After I graduated from college and was ready to head to CA, she called me to her house and told me to 'never get married and don't have kids!' After her kids were grown and gone, she got to be creative...ceramics, knitting, quilting. She could knit me a sweater in a day. I still have them. And her ceramics are beautiful.

I'm sorry you miss them so much....but they are looking over you and are in a very happy place.

86. No ridicule from me
I like your version... and another mentioned the same change.

"Tea Parties are for Mad Hatters with imaginary friends..."

Religion is cruel to girls/women, as is marketing, politics, etc. I remember being a young girl in the Catholic Church. I'd read all about this (really cool) Jesus -- and then I realized how they blamed women for sin, evil, and on and on. I was boiling mad, and my brother lorded it over me. I just never believed Jesus felt that way. Still, I left the church because I did not want my children to hear that dogma.

I'm proud to have a daughter (and a son), in this day and age though -- and happy to point out subtle insults to them heard in everyday vernacular. They've seen (Hispanic) women appointed to the Supreme Court, and an African American elected President. Their friends are of mixed races, and more gays are out of the closet.

Still, like many others here, I'm sick of the misogynistic terminology that will not end -- like douche, pussy, wuss, sissy, bitch, etc. There are no male equivalents. Men throw these slurs around with ease and they are very mainstream now. Unfortunately, women now use them, too.

100. When porn
went mainstream, women lost. Men, too, really. I've read that college boys would rather stay in their dorm and masturbate to porn. Having a relationship with a 'real' girl is like being with an ugly porn star. The New York Magazine had an article on this a couple of years ago.

The only word I can think of as a comparable slur would be 'dildo.' There just isn't much a Feminist Movement out there to counter the MSM portraying women as objects.

The dudes who wrote the Bible knew what they were doing...keeping all the power for themselves. I can't associate w/ any organized religions...just too misogynist. Is your brother any nicer these days?

Jesus was a very cool dude....I loved that he got so angry w/ the moneychangers.
