NYPD Charges Man With Hate Crime After He Allegedly Stabbed Muslim Cab Driver

he New York Police Department has confirmed to TPM that a cab driver in Manhttan was allegedly stabbed by a passenger who asked if the cabbie was Muslim, and says the incident is being treated as a hate crime. The suspect has been charged with attempted murder and other crimes.

According to Detective Marc Nell, at 6:12 pm last night, the driver picked up Michael Enright, 21, of Brewster, NY, at the intersection of 24th Street and 2nd Avenue in Manhattan. The cab proceeded to drive north, and Enright asked the driver, who Nell identified as a 43-year-old Asian male, if he was Muslim. After the driver responded that he was, Enright allegedly stabbed him repeatedly with a Leatherman tool, according to police.

" stabbed the driver in the throat, right arm, left forearm, right thumb and upper lip," Nell said.

According to police, the driver called 911, and stopped the cab on 3rd Avenue between 40th and 41st streets, managing to lock Enright inside until police arrived.

5. A little background

I live in Putnam County. Not only is it one of the reddest parts of blue New York, the town of Brewster has been a particular target of tea partiers. For years, Brewster has been a gathering place for day laborers; Putnam is known for being a working-class area. Everyone in the county works in construction.

Egged on by our batshit crazy assembyman, Greg Ball, there have been numerous anti-immigrant rallies in the town, and attacks on Hispanics. The tea party types took over the local government a few years ago, and it's only become more polarized.

I am not at all surprised by this.

Stay classy, Putnam. I can't wait to move away.

Michael Enright of Brewster, New York, who was booked on charges of attempted murder and assault with a weapon as a hate crime, is listed on Facebook as an employee of the New York City-based Intersections International, a New York-based "global initiative dedicated to promoting justice, reconciliation and peace across lines of faith, culture, ideology, race, class, national borders and other boundaries that divide humanity." And a few weeks ago, they announced their support for -- you guessed it -- the Cordoba House, better known to many as the "Ground Zero Mosque."

I wonder if his trip to afghanistan messed him up. He allegedly said "consider this a checkpoint" before the stabbing began.
