Most of the Falwell Comments on DU Are Downright *Respectful* Compared to What Else Is Out There
Here's just one example:

http://forums.tennessean.com/viewtopic.php?t=44101

And do you know what's fascinating about the threads you see on newspaper websites about Falwell?

The few posters who aren't pissing on his grave aren't even trying to defend his abuses of the past 27 years, they're just taking shots at the "librals."

A dear friend of mine, an out, gay, Republican, had this to say on Falwell's passing: "Well, bless his heart. And I mean that in the Southern way."

There's no reason to lock any threads. This is going on not just in DU but across the whole country - even in the bible belt.

3. It's Amazing, Isn't It?
If the cable news channels don't canonize him, it will be because they've seen how large parts of the country really feel about the guy.

2. Oh no doubt about it. There are a lot of people who recognize the fact
that the world, even though it is still a cruel and harsh place, is just a little bit better today for the passing of one vile and corrupt lying phony.

He is the perfect example of why Christians and Christianity have such a tarnished reputation (like that understatement?) nowdays. He was neither Christlike nor was the bile that he spewed in any way related to the teachings of Christ.

And I am not going to be dishonest either with myself or to others to pretend that I don't think that his passing was long overdue.

13. People didn't celebrate Jesus death like they are Falwell's
Is it a sign of true Christianity; that people celebrate your death? Did the crowd celebrate Jesus death, because he belittled them and condemned them day after day after day…?

I think not...

This is what aggravates me about so-called Christians, today. They are as much like Jesus as my dog is like duck tape. This is not how Jesus instructed His followers to live. Jesus said to love one another, to forgive; judge not that ye be not judged…

There’s a hymn sung often in the Baptist churches, “Let others see Jesus in you.” I don’t see Jesus described in these posts. Jesus said “Get the log out or your eye before you worry about the splinter in your brother’s eye.” and “Let he among you without sin cast the first stone.” and “Go and sin no more”. and “Bessed are the Peacemakers.” and “Love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.”

Something was seriously wrong with Jerry Falwell as it is with so many so-called Christians in this generation. Jesus said whatsoever entereth into a man cannot defile him… That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man… For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts…

But by the grace of God I am what I am...

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

The world is a much better place without Jerry Falwell and those like him in it…

as in, god may bless his heart, but I sure won't.

A kinder version is reserved for those with good intentions who fuck up, royally.

16. You can damn their hide as long as you bless their heart.
There's actually a song about that.

In polite Southern Circles, it's ok to say something nasty about someone as long as you follow it with "bless their heart". It's to give the illusion that you are not being "catty" and actually care about the person but are just pointing out unfortunate character flaws. Another one is "they can't help it", although not used as frequently.

20. Intonation is very important--I can't of course mimic the way my mom
and gramma said it, but if you could hear it, you'd understand completely.

8. No kidding.
The concern trolls seem blissfully unaware that everybody in the country's happy he's dead.

But I think they're blissfully unaware of a lot of things.

11. You and I Rarely Agree
But this looks like one of those occasions.

It's not even like the passing of the president, where one should, in theory, respect the office. No one elected Falwell to political power.

12. Yes, I skimmed a few sites out there today, too
and trust me, we on DU are incredibly civilized about the passing of such an evil man.

The worst posts today were from the pursed-lips, bluenosed crowd going tsk tsk over how we were saying we were glad at least one of them had gone.

"Dancing on his grave" was one of the more often used phrases.

Honey, if you want to see me really dance on a grave, wait until Rove kicks the bucket!

14. Karl Rove is an atheist
GW Bush speaks to God and acts under the instruction of an atheist. GW Bush's brain doesn't believe in God.

Jesus said you can't serve two masters; you must love one and hate the other...

I've known many atheists who were better people than many so-called Christians that I've known, but you can't hold an atheist to the standards that Jesus taught; to what Falwell preached and supposedly believed...

15. ???
What? So as an atheist Rove has no obligation to do what's right? You can't blame him for failing to? Jesus' teachings boil down to some pretty basic moral ideas: love your neighbour, help people, don't kill, don't cheat people, do unto others, etc. I hold all leaders to those teachings.

22. Hitchens was BRUTAL
Jesus, even I who would have cut that fat bastard into ten million pieces and sold them on Ebay as Religious Icons couldn't help but stand there with my mouth open in front of the TV, calling my wife into the room, "YOU GOTTA SEE THIS!"

And good old Cooper was backpedalling furiously, his Master's Voice pealing in his earpiece, "Don't you think Falwell was even a Bit SINCERE?"

Hitchens ROASTED that creature.

Of course it was perfect timing for Hitchens, who has a Book on GOD making the rounds - GOD just handed him the biggest gift of all. :)
