Fox News has oldest cable audience

Who has the most watched news network in all the land?

Fox News!

And who has the oldest audience in all of cable?

Fox News!

In a survey released by analyst Steve Sternberg, Fox News has the oldest audience among fully distributed cable networks. The network's average viewer last season was 65 years old, according to Nielsen. Heck, it's viewers are even older than viewers of Hallmark Channel, Military Channel and Golf Channel.

Perhaps the reason viewers tend to leave Fox News on all day racking up hours of big Nielsen numbers is they can't actually change the channel?

(Ah, Fox News, you know we only kid you because you sort of set yourself up for it).

CNN wasn't far behind, though -- its average audience was 63. MSNBC was a perky 59. CNBC is the young turk at 52.

The youngest fully distributed cable channel? Oxygen. Followed by Bravo and, weirdly, VH1 Classic, then Travel and TLC -- all averaging about 42 years old.

1. It will save Fox money
They won't have to have so many shows in the future as their demographic gets even older and senility sets in, they can just replay the same stuff every few hours and the viewers will never know. O'Reilly would only have to do a couple of rants a week.

What are people my age (34) watching? Maybe the Daily Show and VH1? I watch the Travel Channel pretty much all the time. Anthony Bourdain, Man vs. Food...my husband and I watch those shows all the time.

8. I'm 51 but haven't watched a network news show since I was in my 20s.
I just don't find TV news interesting at all. Since the Clinton impeachment, I've virtually sworn off anything but breaking news on TV. I don't even understand the love so many DUers seem to feel for MSNBC, though I do appreciate Rachel Maddow once in a while.

I get all of my news online these days.

12. I get all my news online too with the occasional CNN once in awhile.
I don't get MSNBC through Comcast, have to have digital cable for that.

5. You can tell the age from the advertisments
When all the commercials are for incontinence, constipation, osteoporosis, power chairs, diabetes supplies, laxatives, hearing aids, "overactive bladder", Ensure, erectile dysfunction, and hair color products, you know that the target audience are some fine specimens of the human form.

6. The nice thing is they can run reruns of the news and most viewers won't notice.
Rerun or not, it doesn't really matter, since all they ever do is parrot the same old crap to people who want to hear the same old crap.
