Plane crash in Alaska - Ted Stevens reportedly on board
Edited on Tue Aug-10-10 04:17 AM by XOKCowboy
Shannyn Moore says she's heard through sources that Ted Stevens was on the plane. No word on fatalities yet.

10. I think that was Olsen. Stevens was convicted of something to do with taking
money and gifts for his place in Alaska. He he had been where he should have been (jail), then he'd be safe.

7. Not confirmed yet.
"They're not out there alone right now. There's people that are providing support," Hayes said. "From what I'm told, there are survivors on this aircraft. I don't know how many could be fatalities at this point

8. Does this mean Palin's gonna be on our TV's all day acting concerned/sad?
I mean, I feel bad for the guy and his family, this isn't a knock on him. But geez, you know Palin will be everywhere today taking advantage of this added spotlight.

12. Stevens survived an earlier plane accident that killed his wife
"On December 4, 1978, Stevens survived the crash of a Lear Jet 25C at Anchorage International Airport. The crash killed five people, including his first wife, Ann"

28. exactly right
Small planes are how people get around in Alaska more than in most places. And between the higher use of small planes and the changeable conditions, its not surprising that both the number and rate of small plane crashes in Alaska is higher than anywhere else in the US. During the 1990s, according to some information I found, 40 percent of all commuter/air taxi crashes in the US occurred in Alaska.

16. Yep this is serious
Friends of former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens said he was traveling Monday to the GCI-owned Agulowak Lodge near Lake Aleknagik, and they were concerned for him.

A woman who answered the phone at the Anchorage home of retired Air Force Gen. Joe Ralston, a good friend of Stevens, said Ralston was with Stevens' wife, Catherine, comforting her and trying to find out what was going on.

No one answered the phone at the homes of Stevens' daughter, Susan Covich, in Kenai, or his son, Ben, in Anchorage.

14. Maybe I'm missing something...
People here are saying, "What a horrible/sad/tragic/etc. way for him to go".

WTF?

No. Dying slowly from a brain tumor like Ted Kennedy did...now that's a tragic/horrible way to go.

Alzheimers...cancer...some other wasting disease...

torture...

those would be horrible ways to go.

Being blotted out in a matter of seconds in a plane crash...how many people whose loved ones suffered for months or years wish it could have been that quick...

18. it is not an either-or situation
sure, a brain tumor is a horrible way to go. As is cancer, or any other disease.

That does not discount the fact that a plane accident is also a tragedy - regardless of who is involved.

23. Well, at least one person said
"It's a sad way for him to go"

and maybe one or two others said it as well.

Any death is tragic to the person's friends and family, but I don't see how going in a plane crash...the act itself... is as sad as wasting away for months or years.

21. I think the general sentiment is that *any way* besides dying unexpectedly in your sleep
is a "horrible/sad/tragic" way to go.

Although Stevens is 87 years old, so he's had a nice full life. I sure won't be flying anywhere when I'm 87, I expect to be just sitting and watching tv all day like my grandpa.

They also reported that Sean O'Keefe was on it too and that it was a "sporting type of trip."

25. Yep, here's what it currently says on O'Keefe's wikipedia page...
"On August 10, 2010 O'Keefe was a passenger in a plane crash, along with former Alaska Senator Ted Stevens."

It's just strange because someone is so excited to update wikipedia that they won't even wait to find out anyone's condition.

29. Update from ADN.com
A plane carrying nine people -- including former Sen. Ted Stevens and former NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe -- crashed in southwest Alaska, killing five people on board, authorities said Tuesday.

Defense contractor EADS North America said Tuesday morning that O'Keefe, the CEO of the U.S.-based division of the European company, was a passenger on the small plane. The company said it had no further information about O'Keefe's status.
