Ugliest cars of all times
The Gremlin was ugly even when they were shiney and new.

A Half-Century of Automotive Eyesores
By Damian Joseph

Considering how many new cars are rolled out every year, it's no surprise that a few might be just plain homely. There's a chance that certain styles might become fashionable with a dash of retro hip. (Well, maybe not from the 1970s.) But for the most part, the following 50 cars will never be anything but design duds.

137. Yup! Gremlins were pretty crappy cars - but made great hot rods
Pete Fiandaca's Modified - a little rough, but he often raced 5 nights a week

I think the stylist must have drawn them with fat tires, 'cuz the sure look better that way!

195. Yeah, actually I was just kidding.
Fully agree that they looked MUCH better with fat tires. I had a friend that had a Gremlin and I thought it looked pretty cool. Of course, his had fat tires and the back end jacked up. You know the drill. Looked like a way different car than the pic of the one posted in the OP.

The PT Loser is just plain homely. (Never mind what a PITA it is to drive. Horrid sightlines, and don't try to get that thing to move uphill in any sort of weather).

And those others look like tissue boxes on wheels.

100. Hey, I love my PT Cruiser!
156k miles and still going strong!
I drive it 40 miles over a 1500ft pass to work 5 days a week, rain or shine!

I think it's very retro looking, and it holds a ton of luggage or musical gear, although the comment on the sight lines is valid, depending on your height/seat/mirror adjustment.

They just rolled the last PT Cruiser off the assembly line, after 10 years.

What's ugly is the Chevy copy of the PT, looks like it's homely older sister...

123. Regarding the PT Cruiser...
...to quote you:

I think it's very retro looking, and it holds a ton of luggage or musical gear, although the comment on the sight lines is valid, depending on your height/seat/mirror adjustment.

I bought my PT, "pre-owned," for cash, with low miles and decent gear hauling capability (with drums/musical equipment and/or artworks of a large size being a number one concern). So far, no major mechanical concerns have been encountered, going on 78,000 miles.

MPGs run around 18-23, not so great, not the worst.

I use a plug-in electric motor scooter for all of my local transportation needs -- within a 20-30 mile round trip radius, not requiring large hauling capacities. I can carry the equivalent of two shopping bags worth of stuff on the e-scooter. It goes 25-30 mph top speed, so it keeps up with the average surface street traffic, easily.

It's downfall was the pathetic powerplant they put in the engine bay. That thing looks like it should have 400 horsepower, not 200. A car that looks like that should be able to outrun a Camry.

Those Ranchero/ElCamino/Baja car-truck hybrids are just stupid. I know they have their fans, but vehicles are not supposed to have identity crises or be Sybil.

Prowler was underpowered, rode rough, had serious fit & finish problems and looked like shit. If ZZ Top got too drunk and threw up in their classic Ford, it would turn into the Prowler.

183. Did it have the "wood" panels?
My sister had the ugly yellow Pinto with the fake wood panels. She hated that car, and it shook like it was having a seizure when she stopped at intersections. People actually pointed and laughed when she drove around town in 1985. When she upgraded to a red Pinto, Dad advertised the wagon as free to anyone who could get it running and out of the driveway. Only 1 person called.

The 2nd one was a "Starsky & Hutch" clone - Stripe like the TV car, same style mag wheels, red paint.
They were very popular drag race cars, and many of the bodies were used on "Modified" style stock cars in the northeast.

They were both trendy at the time, and that's kind of what cars have to be in order to sell at that point in time. Some age better than others.

I expected to see those ugly '70s Mercedes Benz sedans. YUCK! Ugly, ugly, ugly, and even better if painted in one of the factory colors of pea green, warning orange, diarrhea brown, or baby puke yellow.

Extra points if it has a spare tire imprint on the trunk, or a visor bill across the windshield, or push-button gears.

The ugliness of these cars used to make me fume with anger at how could anyone make a car that ugly.

But you know what? I actually really love them now. If I had a lot of money, I'd get one and paint it that exact same color, with frog camoflage pattern. There's something about the stylilng that really gets to me now.

This was the standard German Army jeep in the 1970s, and Volkswagen decided they could sell a few to civilians.

IOW it's a bit like a Hummer, except a Thing gets reasonably good mileage for a car and a Hummer H1 gets worse mileage than a semi--and no, I am NOT kidding.

blurb-

Volkswagen Thing
Introduced: 1969

This is the design philosophy of the Thing: Take the basics of the Beetle—an engine, powertrain, and seats—and plop them in an unfinished metal box. There's no front grille, the bumper is an afterthought, and nobody bothered to round the fenders.

===

In addition to having the factual history all screwed up, and in fact ass backwards and made up, the author goes on to criticize it for not having a front grill? Its an air cooled REAR ENGINE vehicle, dumbass.

50. My first "new" car was a Levi Gremlin.
It was my favorite car ever. It was indestructible. After I put about 100,000 miles on it I gave it to my nephew. He drove it for three years and passed it on to his younger brother who drove it for a couple more years. After that my parents pulled it behind their Winnebago all over the country for a few more years. Currently it is under a tarp in my uncle's barn. Think the 8 track still works? How about the CB radio?

Anyway, I am thinking about having it restored. I have been looking for one to buy but I can not find one exactly like the one I had.

Seriously, I love that car.

95. The person who chose these cars for this slideshow...
obviously doesn't know much about the cars that came before these examples and why some of these look rather sad.

He seemed to dislike the oblique lines in bodywork(Thing and others)but those lines made the sheetmetal work cheaper to produce. Curves are much more expensive.

Lots of the cars he knocked were great favorites of the kids of the period...including the Subaru Brat. The Gremlin too for that matter...saw many in their day all decorated up with hippie flowers and such. Pinto, despite its tire and gas tank problems moved a tremendous number of people around fairly cheaply.

I believe that many of these designs were better than the finished product AFTER the executive committee made changes to them. Both the Gremlin and the Pacer were what I call unfinished designs...rushed into production before completion.

Probably this was the end of our love affair with cars, certainly the end of Marque Identification by many former loyal-to-the-brand owners.

86. I've owned some ugly cars
A '68 Subaru 360 w/ suicide doors and 2-stroke engine

A '61 Saab 96 also 2-stroke and slide-rule speedometer

A '72 Fiat 124 in pea-soup green

They were, strangely, pretty reliable.

98. I think that the Fiat 124 is quite attractive in a form follows function way
Edited on Tue Aug-03-10 11:01 PM by divideandconquer
The Japanese copied the 124 as quick as they could but they never quite pulled off a better looking one.

Don't they still make them in Russia?

Nash had some Pinifarina designed cars in the early 50's, AMC made some good looking midsize cars from 1963-1968, the Javelin was a classic and Jeep Wranglers and Cherokees have become iconic.

102. I think Hummer is ugly in more than one way.
For its utlitarian look, for what it represents in terms of the American War Machine, and for its ridiculously low gas mileage, thus contributing to fossil fuel usage and global climate change.

Had 60,000 miles when it turned age 10. My aunt took it over after Grandma died. At one point I though that thing would never leave the family.

Ours had a vinyl roof (fake convertible). I asked what tree fell on the trunk one time. Grandpa almost hauled off and hit me.

Yes, I judge anyone who drives one. Maybe they were trying to impress others but all it tells me is that the driver lacks sense, character and morals.

And yes it was a lemon. A friend had an orange Yugo, he called LOPOS, for Little Orange Piece of Shit. He got one of the earliest cell phones. Why? "When it breaks down I can call a tow truck."

Leave us not forget the Hummer. Whenever I see one, I repress an urge to fire an RPG at it. And the Volkswagen Thing. This was the WW2 German Kubelwagen with a two wheel drive. My best friend Jerry parked it overnight in a Jewish neighborhood in Chicago. Next morning, he says, it was riddled with bullets.
