Convention on the Rights of the Child, U.N. General Assembly, 1989
>snip from Part I, Article 7:

"1. The child shall be registered immediately after birth and shall have the right from birth to a name, the right to acquire a nationality and, as far as possible, the right to know and be cared for by his or her parents."

...as far as possible

End of story.

The amount of anti-woman, anti-mother backlash in the child support threads today is troubling coming from progressives.

Child support doesn't support women - it supports children, children who were made by two people, a man and a woman.

3. The moaning man-wannabees will still complain, though.
After all, demanding they actually live up to their responsibilties and obligations is terribly sexist to males dontcha know. :sarcasm:

4. See, this is what upsets me -
those arguing that men should be able to opt out of their responsibility as parents continue to push that the women should be the gatekeepers sexually, which is in no way a new idea.

It is the oldest idea there is when it comes to controlling women sexually. And it's ridiculous. Women are no more virtuous or saintly than men, and they share only an equal amount of responsibility for the outcome of a consensual sexual encounter.

And no woman should be told that since she has become pregnant, her options are to have an abortion, give her child away, or raise it alone with no contribution from its father when said father is fully capable of providing a contribution.

Men aren't suffering the world over from having to help support their children. Children ARE suffering the world over from needing support and not receiving any.

This isn't a men versus women fight - it's a parent versus child fight, and it's disgusting.

10. Well, actually it is BOTH a parent versus child fight and a man versus woman fight.

The children are merely collateral damage for those men who are so bitter against women that they don't care who they harm in their efforts to "get back" at women they perceive to have wronged them.

Which, not coincidentally, is also the mindset of abusers. Just sayin'.

6. Thank you.
My mom was a single mother. Single parents are heroes, and the tiny pittance they get from the courts isn't even enough to raise children. My mother was always terrified CPS was going to take us even if she bought us a pizza at a restaurant once a week. These threads about "party moms" are bogus. Just because one or two sociopaths game the system sometimes doesn't mean the whole system needs to be trashed.

7. I worry about those things as well -
like, am I a bad mother because I bought myself a pair of shoes last month? Or took my daughter to the movies instead of using that $6 to buy yogurt?

9. My dad raised me and my brother after my mom split
Dad's can be heroes too. Not that anyone has knocked on dads, I'm just sayin'.

My dad is definitely my hero.

11. Oh, absolutely. I've seen that, too.
And your dad, while not unique, is certainly uncommon.
