Right Wing Apoplectic That Montana School Is Teaching Tolerance, Safe Sex, And Anti-Bullying Measure

http://thinkprogress.org/2010/07/17/abstinence-curriculum/

-snip-

The curriculum would teach first graders “that human beings can love people of the same gender;” second graders “not to make fun of people by calling them ‘gay’ or ‘queer;’” and fifth and sixth graders that “there are several types of intercourse.” These ideas spurred right-wing pundits Sean Hannity (and guest Fox News contributor Todd Starnes), Bill O’Reilly, and Laura Ingraham into a tail-spin on their shows this week over the curriculum as a weapon to promote the homosexual agenda:

– HANNITY: What right does a school district that can’t even teach kids to read and write — and this is, generally speaking, around the country — have to impose their values on the kids? <7/13/10>

– STARNES: Sean, this is the report right here. Sixty-two pages. I have read every single word. And I’ve got to tell you something, Jack and Jill go up the hill, and they do some really inappropriate things once they get up there. <...> Rub a dub dub, three men in a tub. <7/13/10>

– O’REILLY: This stuff comes from the school boards and the superintendent. They want to indoctrinate the children. The reason is they don’t want bullying. They want tolerance across the board. So you take a 5-year-old who just wants to play and, all of a sudden, it’s Heather has two mommies or Gary has 18 daddies. I don’t know what it is. <7/14/10>

– INGRAHAM: Children will learn that sexual relationships could happen between two men or two women. Why stop there? Why are they stopping at two? I mean that’s very exclusionary, don’t you think? No plant life invoked. <7/15/10>

1. But they expect us to protect their little fundie darlings, all the same.
When they wear shirts to school, saying "Turn or Burn", we can't allow bullying for that. But heaven forbid we should try to protect a little boy who might get caught playing with a Barbie in preschool. Disgusting.

2. O-Reilly sounds the most delusional, I mean he says' they don't want bullying' like it's a bad thing
Seriously, just how delusional do you have to be to attack a school for not wanting bullying? And really, by attacking them for 'promoting tolerance across the board' he's just admitting that he's intolerant, why else would he find teaching tolerance for all so outrageous?

3. Bullying is a key right wing "value"
it teaches kids that the strong and powerful can completely destroy the weak and powerless, and that the weak and powerless deserve to be abused

4. It sounds like ingraham is really pissed
that they are trying to tell her that she can only have one partner.

It sounds like she wants as many partners as she wants. That is what it sounds like to me........ just saying

Not sure if teaching children that young about homosexuality in school is correct. At some point that education should take place, just not sure at what age.

7. Children that young could have classmates who have homosexual parents
They need to learn that not everyone comes from a family with a mom and a dad. We don't need to get into detail about sexual practices but teaching young children to be accepting of one another is the first component of an anti-bullying program.

8. I was talking more of the homosexual aspect
If a question comes up then it should be addressed. I have no problem teaching children not to bully and teaching them tolerance.

9. I think it's directly related to bullying.

Kids that young who have glbt parents can be bullied by students taught to be homophobic at home.

5. ah - the false argument crowd! "Gary has 18 daddies", making it sound like he's being passed around
for abuse! and the other mouth breather saying, "why are they stopping at two (people in a relationship)? No plant life is invoked", just shows that these people are the enemy of rational thought.

14. I don't think they meant he's being passed around for abuse...
I think they're trying to infer that gay men cannot be in monogamous relations and, therefore, are with a whole host of different men.

6. Something wrong with wanting to prevent bullying?
These wing nut assholes need to understand that we are living in a diverse society. And as long as they promote the image of a society made up of white heterosexual Christians, bullying will be a problem in our schools.

11. If kids are allowed an education
They'd get smarter, which means fewer republican voters. Hence, bullying and terrorizing are not only an acceptable means to an end, it's the preferable means to an end.
