Miami GOP House candidate David Rivera accused of domestic violence (Rubio's pal)
Republican corruption in Florida.

It just never ends.

But most of the GOP don't seem to mind if there is domestic violence in their ranks...

To set up this saga:

State Representative David Rivera(R), is gunning for the Congressional seat vacated by Mario Diaz-Balart(R-FL), who is himself running for the safer seat of retiring brother Lincoln Diaz-Balart(R-FL).

Rivera is also best buds with Marco Rubio.

Howie Klein explains it:

July 8, 2010

Last week we gave you another example of how the Republican Party of Florida is rotten to its core as the boss of the Miami GOP and candidate for Congress in FL-25, David Rivera, was caught red-handed lying about the company he keeps. We knew David Rivera was corrupt and sleezy...we just never imagined he beat women-- literally.

It turns out that the Miami Dade County Clerk of Courts website lists David Rivera as a repeat domestic violence offender. I think this is a DWT exclusive right now. I haven't seen it anywhere else online-- except here (click-- and keep in mind that REPVIOL means Repeated Acts of Violence).

.....

Based on what we know, Tea Party fave, Paul Crespo, and Marili Cancio (Rivera's primary opponents for the GOP nomination), will present documentation of Rivera's domestic violence record tonight at the local GOP meeting and ask for his resignation.

State Rep. David Rivera's campaign for U.S. Congress has taken quite the ass-kicking since he was caught being less than forthright about his friendship with Ariel Pereda, a Miami businessman who facilitates trade with Cuba. Being a hard-line, pro-Cuban embargo advocate since he took public office, looking like a hypocrite wasn't something Rivera expected heading into tonight's monthly meeting and candidates forum of the Republican Party of Miami-Dade. And who knows if Rivera will even show up considering one of his political opponents is promising to expose the former house budget committee chairman in front of local GOP'ers.

.....

Interestingly enough, the police showed up at the Miami GOP meeting and escorted Rivera's rival Paul Crespo out the door. Perhaps it was to prevent Crespo from exposing Rivera's domestic violence record in front of the GOP attendees?

A Spanish language channel asked Rivera about these allegations of domestic violence:

Here is the Google http://www.diariolasamericas.com/noticia/103089%26pag%3D1%26st%3D0/&ei=AhA6TMu9HMWBlAepq5nTBw&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CBsQ7gEwAQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3DJenia%2BDorticos%2BDavid%2BRivera%2Brepeat%2Bviolence%26hl%3Den%26prmd%3Do">translation of the story:

David Rivera

Courts, under the local number 1994-023015-FC-04, presented by Jeni Dorticos on October 13, 1994.

Rivera negó que se trate de él. Rivera denied that concerned him. “Es totalmente falso. "It is totally false. Nunca he tenido ninguna acusación ni alegación en contra de mí.” Dijo que el sitio que reportó la supuesta denuncia “es un blog demócrata, y lanzan falsedades contra todos los candidatos republicanos”, y que era triste ver alegaciones falsas y sin evidencia reportadas en los medios de comunicación I've never had any charge or allegation against me. "He said the site that reported the alleged complaint" is a Democratic blog, and throw lies against all Republican candidates, "and it was sad to see false allegations and no evidence reported in media

Los aspirantes republicanos Paul Crespo y Marilú Cancia anunciaron que solicitarían en reunión del Comité Ejecutivo Republicano de Miami-Dade, la renuncia de Rivera a su cargo de presidente. The Republican contenders Paul Crespo and Marilu Cancia announced that they would ask the Executive Committee meeting in Miami-Dade Republican, Rivera's resignation from his position as president. Rivera dijo que nada de eso ocurrió, pues ni Crespo ni Cancia son miembros del Comité, y “nadie del Comité pidió mi renuncia”, y que se condujo “una reunión cordial, y no hubo ninguna controversia.” Rivera said that nothing of the sort happened, as neither Cancia Crespo or are members of the Committee, and "one of the Committee asked for my resignation," and that it conducted "a cordial meeting, and there was no dispute."

This is not all the nastiness on this guy.

David Rivera and Marco Rubio face new financial scrutiny over foreclosure on Tallahassee property

June 19, 2010

TALLAHASSEE — Republican U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio is again answering questions about troubles with his personal finances after a bank sought to foreclose on a Tallahassee home he owns with another Miami lawmaker.

Rubio and David Rivera, the House budget chairman who is running for Congress in Miami, failed to make payments for five months, prompting Deutsche Bank to seek full payment and fees totalling $136,000 in a civil lawsuit filed Monday.

.....

Sounds like David and Marco need themselves some money.

Maybe that's why Rivera just recently got the #@$% kicked out of him for hitting up all 4,000 employees of Miami's Florida International University for campaign cash. Read the solicitation letter here.

July 9, 2010

State Rep. David Rivera -- a Miami Republican and budget chief who has steered state funding to Florida International University -- solicited all 4,000 FIU employees to donate to his congressional campaign, prompting the provost to issue a campus-wide warning Thursday about using public resources for political activities.

A disclaimer at the bottom of the letter said it was paid for by the Rivera campaign and that no FIU resources were used.

The letter was signed by two FIU professors, who said that Rivera helped the school receive more state money for new facilities than any other public university in 2010. In 2009, Rivera helped secure an additional $11 million for FIU's new medical school.

``No legislator has made more significant contributions to FIU's growth and development over the past several years than David,'' wrote public administration professor Allan Rosenbaum and politics professor John F. Stack Jr.

The letter triggered Provost Douglas Wartzok to write in a memo: ``We all have a right and are encouraged to be involved in the political process, but such activity must take place off-campus, using private resources, and on personal time.''

The Rivera campaign dismissed the memo as ``an internal FIU matter.'' But the dustup comes as the fierce proponent of the Cuban embargo finds himself in the hot seat for denying his close relationship with a businessman who facilitates trade with Cuba, Ariel Pereda.

``Everyone knows that is not true,'' said Rivera campaign rival Marili Cancio, who along with candidate Paul Crespo demanded that Rivera resign his chairmanship of the Miami-Dade Republican Party at a raucous party meeting Thursday. Crespo said he was asked by police to step outside the meeting for going over his allotted speaking time.

.....

The fundraising letter was sent to The Miami Herald by an unidentified FIU employee, who wrote in an e-mail that ``The discomfort we all feel at being solicited at work is entirely bipartisan.''

.....

And more about Rivera's friend Ariel Pereda, whom Rivera denies knowing:

David Rivera's friendship with Cuba trade backer at issue

July 1, 2010

State Rep. David Rivera, a hard-liner on the embargo on Cuba, finds himself in an awkward spot over his friendship with a businessman who facilitates trade with Cuba.

State Rep. David Rivera's close relationship with a businessman who facilitates trade with Cuba is becoming increasingly awkward for the congressional candidate, one of Florida's most outspoken proponents of the embargo on the island.

Rivera, chairman of the Miami-Dade Republican Party and House budget chief, is publicly distancing himself from Ariel Pereda, the former chairman of a political fundraising committee Rivera was associated with and principal of the Havana Group, a firm that advises companies on how to trade with Cuba.

One of Rivera's opponents in the congressional race, Republican Paul Crespo, describes trade with Cuba as an ``incredibly emotional'' issue in the heavily Cuban-American district now represented by Mario Diaz-Balart. Diaz-Balart is moving to run in the district held by his brother, Lincoln Diaz-Balart, who is retiring.

Rivera and Pereda both deny being more than acquaintances, though other Republicans say their friendship is common knowledge.

.....

Rivera's rival Crespo said most Republican voters support the embargo on Cuba. ``They'll care about hypocrisy and the issue, and they'll feel like they're being played by a politician,'' he said.

.....

So, to recap, in under 3 weeks, David Rivera has been exposed further as:

1. A likely domestic violence perpetrator;

2. Involved in a foreclosure scandal with Marco Rubio for nonpayment of mortgage;

3. Unethical campaign solicitation from employees of an entire university;

4. Hypocritical on Cuba trade.

There has to be some kind of award for this kind of failure in a republican state representative in Florida.

Let's hope it isn't a US Congressional seat.
