oops! Brownback asserts Manning, not Favre, is greatest QB (in WISCONSIN!)
LAKE GENEVA, Wis. -- Note to Sen. Sam Brownback: In Packerland, it's not cool to diss Brett Favre.

The GOP presidential hopeful drew boos and groans Friday at the Wisconsin Republican Party convention when he used a football analogy to talk about the need to focus on families.

"This is fundamental blocking and tackling," he said. "This is your line in football. If you don't have a line, how many passes can Peyton Manning complete? Greatest quarterback, maybe, in NFL history."

Oops, wrong team to mention in Wisconsin, once described by Gov. Tommy Thompson as the place "where eagles soar, Harleys roar and Packers score."

That's really bad," he said. "That will go down in history. I apologize."

His apology brought a smattering of applause and laughter. He tried to recover, saying former Packer Bart Starr may be the greatest of all time, but the crowd was still restless.

2. it shouldn't
but it shows that it's important that you at least know the area where you're speaking. He's ovbiously out of touch with what people like and want if he doesn't know who wisconsinites like.

16. What is it with candidates and Packer fans?
I remember Kerry pissed them off by calling it "Lambert Field," too. What twisted people to only vote on football.

3. Lake Geneva's kind of a resort town not far from the Illinois border
Even a reference to Chicago Bear Walter Peyton would have gone over bigger than Peyton Manning.

26. Lake Geneva Is Definitely Bears Territory
It's the Chicaago area equivelent of the Poconos...where the "beautiful people" have their summer homes. It's a beautiful area and about the only thing Brownback would get from his visit is a nice box of chocolate.

At least he didn't talk about his true "quarterback"...Jeeebus.

8. on what planet?
He has half the passing yards of Favre. He only threw 152 TD passes compared to 138 interceptions. Lifetime QB rating is 80.5 compared to 85.1 for Favre and 94.4 for Manning. Favre has thrown for 57,500 yards, 2nd most in the NFL and 20,000 more than Peyton. It is very likely that Peyton will break most of those records but he hasn't yet. Until he does, Favre is still da man. Actually, in most categories Marino is still da man, and always will have gotten to 60,000 yards and 420 touchdowns in fewer games than Favre.

I suppose it's some kind of Viking thing. Like I said elsewhere on this thread, I'm one of maybe three people in this state who could give a shit about football.

14. everyone but Phil Simms and Doug Williams
both of whom spanked his team in Superbowls. Elway, the arrogant one, who refused to play for a team that wasn't already good. Has 900 fewer completions than Favre, 6,000 fewer yards, a lifetime quarterback rating that is six points lower, and 114 fewer touchdown passes.
Favre should get some kudos for doing what he did while playing for the hapless Packers. The year before Favre became the starter, the Packers were 4-12. Unlike Mr. I-am-too-good-to-play-for-the-Colts Elway whose Broncos were 10-6 two seasons before they got Elway and even Marino whose Dolphins were 11-4-1 before they got him.

25. It wasn't that Elway wouldn't play for a team that was already good,
he wouldn't play for the Colts owner, especially since he also had the option of playing for the Yankees.

Picking a career in football over a career in baseball mystifies me, but whatever. BTW, life-long Broncos fan here and I'll say it, Elway wasn't half the QB Montana was.

But could Montana pitch?

12. As one of maybe 3 Wisconsinites who aren't fans of any organized sports,
I can tell you Packers fans are not like football fans elsewhere. They are not normal. They are twisted. They are merciless and unforgiving. To dis Favre in this state is the same as coming out against Christ in Mississippi.

27. Onething you should know about people from Michigan's Upper Penninsula:
They tend to support teams from Wisconsin more than teams from Michigan for some reason.

The only exception is the Detroit Red Wings. Most Yooper hockey fans are die-hard fans of the Wings.
