BP ready to switch caps on Gulf leak

* White House wants BP answers on capping efforts

* Relief well could intercept leaking well in 7-10 days

* Oil-capture systems handle 24,575 barrels on Wednesday (Adds details, quotes, White House questions, byline)

By Kristen Hays

HOUSTON, July 8 (Reuters) - BP Plc <BP.L> <BP.N> is ready to switch caps at the wellhead of the gushing Gulf of Mexico leak to create a hurricane-ready system that can capture more oil, the top official overseeing the spill response said on Thursday.

U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen said BP and government officials would decide in the next 24 to 48 hours whether to switch caps, which would allow crude to leak unchecked in the interim.

The switch also would increase BP's siphoning capacity to 80,000 barrels a day among four vessels that could disconnect and move fast if a hurricane approaches.

2. Haven't kept up; they finally admitted to more than 20K barrels a day going into the water?
Low ball estimates on leaks and no outside observation would suggest just trying to duck out of the real amount of fines owed.

When they want to look good, we get higher numbers?

Bastards. Drop them in their own oil.
