The Cavaliers owner is being mocked online for using Comic Sans font in a letter to fans about LeBron James' departure.

Unless you're a fourth-grader, or being ironic, or the author of a comic book, or on vacation from the 1990s, never use that typeface.

On Twitter, discussion of Gilbert's font choice briefly trumped the debate about James' move to the Miami Heat, according to the blog TechCrunch, which posted a screen grab of the trending topics from that messaging site.

One of the blog's writers, MG Siegler, says the font faux pas is especially egregious given how much press Gilbert's letter is receiving.

"Normally a staple among six-year olds and grandmothers, Gilbert for some reason decided to use the font to write what will undoubtedly be the most public message he will ever write," he writes. "And it's too bad, because the content of the message itself is quite good -- very juicy. Gilbert's use of quotes, capitalization, and bolded letters makes it very clear just how pissed off he is."

Siegler calls Comic Sans "probably the worst font ever to grace the computer screen."

6. I see a lot of e-mail forwards from the "teabagger" set that use comic sans.

I guess it adds that "folksy" appeal. Like your hearing Sarah Palin speak.

Also, I heard CBS bought the rights to LeBron's next contract re-negotiation. They want to run it as a 12 part miniseries. Spielberg has already started per-production, and Morgan Freeman has committed to play LeBron.

7. I don't get the hullaballoo over Comic Sans

It's just a font. There's nothing particularly egregious about it at all. It's a bit informal looking, but so what? Numerous other fonts are similar, and they don't get the abuse Comic Sans does.

My guess is it's an overreaction to it's equally irrational popularity amongst younger internet users a few years back. It's just fashionable to bash it now I suppose.

Now, if you want a font to be taken seriously, it's Courier and only Courier, baby. Courier will make you eat dirt and grovel to ask for seconds. Courier doesn't take shit from anybody, and nobody gives you shit for using Courier.

Comic Sans, on the other hand, is lacking only little hearts as dots over the i's to establish it as the font of choice for little girls whose chief interest in life is unicorns. Or rainbows. I don't give a fuck which, because they're not to be taken seriously. So sleep well, Cleveland. The reason you lost a generational basketball player is because your owner should be hosting make-believe tea parties instead of running an NBA franchise.

You deserve to lose.

Comic sans thinks it's nailing the homecoming queen, but it's really just embarrassing itself by flailing away with the chick nicknamed "anybody's" at the 10th class reunion. You might as well host a make-believe tea party in your backyard as use comic sans.

Courier doesn't have to crib from anybody.
