1. I chose it sucks. I used to like this Country andI was fairly happy
with the way things were going, but it's either getting much worse than it ever was, or I'm getting more info and paying more attention to what' really goig on. Maybe it's a combnation of those, but it feels like it's been such a very long time since I've heard anthing really good, but the bad keeps coming!

93. I voted it sucks.
Half the people in this nation are brain dead and vote for (R) politicians and in the process are harming their lives and the lives of billions of people around the world. Not to elaborate, but I am just hoping President Obama will carry through with his reforms and bring real change not just to the United States, but to the World.

It enrages me to see America ruined by powerful, rich and callous assholes that obviously don't give the slightest damn about it except as a means to further their overweening ambitions.

16. I agree 100% with you. This is not the country I was born into and I am really
concerned as to what it has become and even more concerned as to where it's headed. It seems to me that in the years of Clinton it just moved along. It went so far downhill during the years of Bush that I really wonder if it can even be patched back together.

it over the edge and I hold them the most responsible. Nothing remains the same so no matter how bad it gets, it will eventually start going back in the right direction. And again and again and again. I don't think we ever learn. :(

66. Yep, I agree. I also think what happens is generational knowledge is lost. Younger
people did not live through Vietnam and all, then Reagan... and than came the Bushes. So, they just haven't been exposed to how horrible some presidents were in terms of doing what was good for the entire country.

And this absolute mess Bush and his cohorts made of Iraq and Afghanistan. A smart and capable president and administration would have determined how to have taken care of Ben Laden and crew without having made this horrible mess Obama is trying to clean up. And they never would have gone into Iraq.

I agree so much, as you said, "And again and again and again. I don't think we ever learn. :("

94. I'm with you Goddess,
I agree that our country is FUBAR and we have a lot of work to do.

I want ALL the troops home and let people work out the principals of democracy and we can LEAD by example, not with fire-power.

I want all the good ideas of Green Jobs to become the reality. The Military Idustrial Complex will need to re-train it's agenda.

No more waiting for civil rights for LGBT community.

And is it all so corrupt and racist that bringing Mexico out of the 3rd world, is never even discussed?
Why is it always about them sneaking in?
How can we have a wholesome country when we border on a land of "The Grapes of Wrath?"

Even still, I love America.

95. "Freedom isn't free"
I know, it sounds annoying when we think of the illegal warmonger's slogan. But it's true.
Freedom is not something that is just going to happen in this country. We've seen it time and again in our history as well as the histories of other countries.

If we're going to have a "global economy", we're going to need a "global citizenry" to inspire the oppressed and work toward ensuring that the rights of the average person are not violated to satisfy the desires of the wealthy minority.

If country A wont take you, then surely country, B, C, D etc will.

Option 3 in the OP's poll had so many votes I felt compelled to ask.

I'm not judging anyone, just wondering why some people would hate where they are yet stay there.

No- other nations don't just want you -and being an American doesn't make you "special."

Indeed, if other nations had good sense, they'd cast a jaundiced eye, as Americans don't exactly have the best reputation around the world for respecting others' customs and ways of doing things.

The fact that other countries' immigration laws prevent you from leaving is evidence enough that things aren't so peachy elsewhere.

And no, I'm not a "My country, right or wrong" type who looks down my nose at other cultures. As early as my teens, I became interested in other cultures, writing to pen pals in other countries, learning other languages, and what have you.

But my philosophy is, "My country--right the wrongs."

That's nonsense. How about you get back to me when the US joins us in having universal healthcare, good pay and conditions for most workers, and an economy that hasn't sputtered and died, and then you can talk to me about how things aren't so peachy here ;)

The history of Ellis Island will show you that one.

Honestly, I think alot of this "it sucks" vote is coming from the "I'm so hip, contraire and iconoclastic" brigade. I used to see it all the time in the 8th and 9th graders I taught as a substitute. It's cute, on them at that age.

er... No.

And to be perfectly honest about it- I agree with those who you call "8th and 9th graders." Their complaints and perspective are largely evidence based and the facts are on the record.

Face it. On the eve its birthday, America's become a nation that's betrayed its highest principles over and over and lost respect for the social contract with and among its people.

More than that though- it's nation inexorably in decline.

Sad- but undeniably true.

The country I want to move to will take me, no questions asked, because the field I work in is in very high demand. Not so my partner. But, if we save enough money, we can move there with the nest egg.

I used to love the U.S., but I'm way tired of being a part of this dying empire. She seems hellbent on destroying herself and taking out as many as she can with her. It's begun to feel like my relationship with her is codependent and therefore, not helping either of us.

Sincere question - hard to tell sincerity from sarcasm in text, I know, but I'm just asking. Because there are a lot of countries in this world, you know. If choice A won't have you for whatever reason, there are still a lot of other countries. So the US must be #2 on your list?

I've had my eye on Vancouver, BC for a long time. I've not really researched a second or a third. I live in the US and while the area I live in is beautiful, I don't want to be attached to this dying empire anymore. I would be the happiest of campers if Canada annexed my half of Washington. Of course, that isn't going to happen but a girl can dream......

Edited to add: I just realized that I would also like NSW and had intended to do a 3 month to a year stint there about a decade ago. Then I got married and it hasn't come up again.

17. I was really taken by all the "this place sucks I wish I could go" votes
For one, you can go. Anytime. It takes very little to move northward if you like snow and hockey, or southward if you like margaritas and beach.

Also, it never ceases to amaze me the logic of those who can leave and refuse to, preferring to stick around and bitch. We have a cadre of them here in Hawaii. They bitch daily. About the prices. About the Hawaiians. About the pidgin speak. About the cultural ways. About the laid back attitude. Bitch bitch bitch, its hate Hawaii all day, every hour. Yet, here they stay.

Now that I've unloaded that, I have to say I love my nation because I've seen her at her best as well as her worst. And I think that its possible to get the best out of her on a more constant basis. That is worth sticking around for. That is worth working for. For all her warts, she is still home.

The people who bitch and bitch and bitch but don't leave...

If their only worry is that they can't find an equal job in another country, then isn't that at least one reason to love this country?

If things are that bad here, then nothing should hold them back.

Sort of reminds me of people who stay in "rotten" marriages, bitching and complaining, yet when they're asked why the hell they don't just leave, their reason is that they don't want to lose financial support or downsize to a smaller house or something.

Ummm...yeah. OK.

69. Wow, simplify stuff much????
People stay in bad marriages all the time because their options are limited. No money to leave, no job skills. I guess in your perfect world they leave and magic money shows up.

Same with people in bad jobs, no other jobs available. So you think they should not complain because they will not quit? Wow, what a great friend you must me.

If people don't like this country that is their right, sorry it bothers you. And if a company in Canada offered them a good job maybe they would leave. But if they don't then I am fine with them staying here and complaining. Maybe you can make it illegal.

73. People who stay in bad marriages
Edited on Sun Jul-04-10 11:13 AM by pipi_k
or any bad situation are not powerless unless someone is actually holding them hostage.

People have choices in this world, assuming they're free adults.

Kids have no choice. They have no power.

But adults? Please.

There are always options. They may not be attractive options, but there they are.

Bad marriage? Move in with parents or friends, ask for help and get training (often low cost or free) for some job skill.

Sometimes people even end up sabotaging themselves. They get into a bad situation...I'll use marriage here...and they know it sucks, but they then go on to make it even WORSE and even harder to leave by having a baby. Or more children.

Real bright. :eyes:

As a friend, yes...I will listen and give options in case the person hasn't thought of them on his/her own. But if the complaining goes on and on and on, and there's not even a minimal attempt to change one's conditions, then I don't want to hear it anymore. If things suck that badly, find some way to fix them, even if it involves getting a therapist to help. People who complain endlessly don't realize that they are emotional vampires.

I'm a friend...not a therapist. And certainly not a Saint.

PS...adding this...

And try being on the other side of the complaining...say you have a spouse or employee or friend or whatever who only bitches about how bad it is to be with you. Day after day after day.

How great would you feel if you said, "Well, look...if things are THAT bad here, why the hell don't you leave?"

And the person replies, "Well, I would, but I can't find anything better".

Basically, the person is only with you because of selfish motives.

You're not going to feel a bit...used?

If that's OK with you, then go for it.

I, however, don't get along well with users.

Or people who complain endlessly but never do anything to help themselves.

I felt bad during the Bush Administration and right after 911, using that as an excuse to piss on others - there are times when we do roll over other countries and bully them - but the fact I feel bad about that means I love the country. Its ideals are the best.

22. I love the potential of what this country could be and seemingly seldom has been.
It seems as though we have sacrificed our better national nature at the altar of the dark side of "I, me, mine", the resentment of anyone getting something we don't, the "what's in it for me" attitude, the search for scapegoats for any problem, embracing the YOYO (You're On Your Own) philosophy, rejecting the belief that we are our brother's or sister's keeper, that people get what they deserve unless, of course, it is us.

There is a huge portion of our citizenry who are willing deceived that the rich deserve all the tax breaks they can get and that there is nothing wrong with giving businesses billions of dollars in corporate welfare in the belief that they will benevolently use it to help America. This group has no problem with swallowing that camel but it strains at the gnat of a single mother on welfare who gets maybe $600-700 a month and has to jump through hoops to get every penny.

This same group is more than willing to provide a blank check for bombs and bullets but resents money being spent to help people, for education, for health care, or simply making sure no American goes hungry.

My own family was in this country over 140 years before the Declaration of Independence was signed, so my roots here are deep. Likely long before the "love it or leave it" or the "I hate immigrants" crowd. I hate to say it but I am very pessimistic about the future of this nation. I am closing in on 58 years and I fear that those coming of age today will see an inferior nation by the middle of this century to what we even have today. one where all the wealth and power are concentrated at the very top.

Did the Romans know their empire was declining when they were in the midst of it?

26. I would never expatriate.
I am an American. I love my country. I love my country's system of government, though I'll be the first to say it needs to be repaired. I believe in freedom. I believe in representative government. I believe our government - yes, I know most of you consider me naive for this, but it's true - I believe our government will be responsive to the will of the people if ever we can stop fighting among ourselves long enough to make our demands clear.

I love my country so much that if it's going down, I'm going down with it.

if there was a right of return to sweden i would go.
at least i could live out the rest of my life knowing that my medical problems would be taken care of and my medical bills would not be passed on to my wife and kids.

welcome to america where close to 50% of the bankruptcies are caused by medical bills and 50% of those are people who have insurance. i can`t afford to get the procedures i need because i can`t afford what my insurance won`t pay.

41. The number is now 62% of bankruptcies
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/152741.php

and 75.7% of those were insured.

http://content.healthaffairs.org/cgi/content/abstract/hlthaff.w5.63v1

According to the lead researchers, the health care legislation will do little to curb these rates- and indeed, they're likely to increase as the incentives now favor the proliferation of high deductible high copay coverage.

53. As an Aussie
My passion and love for the United States is second to none and it has been ever since I was about eight or nine years old. America is a beautiful country with an incredibly rich history, wonderful people and a diversity in culture and lifestyles which greatly enriches its value. Many of the foundations and principles that the country was built on has served as an inspiration for people seeking freedom, equality, peace and goodwill around the world. It is the country where statesman like Robert F Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, John F Kennedy, Paul Wellstone, Barack Obama and countless others who have changed the world for the better in magnificent ways came from. America more often than not has served as a force for good around the world in decades gone by.

I think it is precisely because I love the United States so much that I am critical of some of the modern aspects of the American political structure. I feel that a country as great and wonderful as America has been betrayed by the role of big corporations, right wing reactionary politicians and a biased, complacent and sometimes complicit media. What America has evolved into under the past three decades under the dominance of these three factors has made a mockery of everything beautiful and good that America once stood for and represented. Such a beautiful country like the United States deserves much better than what it is getting and that does greatly sadden me

I don't even love Australia, and it's my own country. If I were to grudgingly love another country, however, it'd be the UK coz the weather's grey and drab and everyone forms orderly queues for everything and don't push in. And Shaun the Sheep comes from there, or so I've been told. Now, Shaun the Sheep is worthy of deep and abiding love, not like the US or other countries...

...thirteen young colonies broke away from the brits...

...through compelling methods left unto men's hands...
"it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands"...
...by revolt cutting ties to that overseas mother...
"which have connected them with another"...
...hence early states shall be given new birth...

...vowing to those both the poor and the rich...
"the separate and equal station to which"...
...a conscience of liberty is deeded wherein...
"the laws of nature and of nature's god entitle them"...
...in giving freedom of thought a home's open mind...
"a decent respect to the opinions of mankind"...
...as publicly made so all be aware...
"requires that they should declare"...
...those reasons behind the states' liberation...
"the causes which impel them to the separation"...
...that man's awareness is justly meant...
"we hold these truths to be self-evident"...
...let our account set about its sequel...
"that all men are created equal"...
...through references being related before...
"that they are endowed by their creator"...
...as is our accord under this light...
"with certain unalienable rights"...
...of inborn standards in so far...
"that among these are"...
...opportunity bearing to have full bequest...
"life... liberty... and the pursuit of happiness"...
...furthered by procurement's plight...
"that to secure these rights"...
...representation's arrangement begins and...
"governments are instituted among men"...
...with fair play replacing oppressive old sovereign...
"deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed"...
...as previous leaders raised devastation within...
"that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends"...
...then since its embodiment must ensure things stay fit...
"it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it"...
...reconstructively necessitating earnest attempts...
"and to institute new government"...

"laying its foundation on such principles"...
...of enacting a working plan up from that core...
"and organizing its powers in such form"...
...for each action's outcome to reflect basic interests...
"as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness"...
...since careful consideration subsequently rehashes...
"prudence indeed will dictate that governments long established"...
...can't waste transformation on trivial loss as...
"should not be changed for light and transient causes"...
...hence history's clear hindsight makes it well known...
"and accordingly all experience hath shown"...
...ill ways garner gain when heavily readily touchable...
"that mankind are more disposed to suffer while evils are sufferable"...
...through rather less doing of what has to be done...
"than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed"...
...as also its process while checking those stations...
"but when a long train of abuses and usurpations"...
...headed downhill around neck and neck...
"pursuing invariably the same object"...
...leaving commonweal ailing from some tyrant's favoritism...
"evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism"...
...the public good must use their scrutiny...
"it is their right... it is their duty"...
...through efforts against blatant mismanagement...
"to throw off such government"...
...with protection to shield from ill-willed impurities...
"and to provide new guards for their future security"...
...as ailing distress must overcome hardship solidly...
"such has been the patient suffrance of these colonies"...
...for it needs to be dealt with inevitably...
"and such is now the necessity"...
...in proceeding to eliminate reign's unjust intent...
" which constrains them to alter their former systems of government"...
...where a legacy left by the crown is now written...
"the history of the present king of great britain"...
...lording his power without rightful validations...
"is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations"...
...relying on injustice to collect...
"all having in direct object"...
...a goal of overbearing control of america's fate...
"the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states"...
...hence so nothing is amiss...
"to prove this"...
...this record exposes these details unfurled...
"let facts be submitted to a candid world"!...

(as hence they were!)...

a meaningful 4th of july to each'n'all!... :)

Millions are still trying to come here for a better life, and millions have succeeded. It's not perfect. I'm no "Super Genius Guy", Even with all the USA's faults, I can't name another country that has done and still does more for the world.

79. Other:
1. Define "country."

2. I have never loved this government. I appreciate and value the positive things about the constitution this government is supposed to uphold.

3. While I value the people of this country the same way I value, and honor, all living things, I don't respect most of them, and don't much like too many of them. Just as I recognize the importance of every part of an ecosystem, even though there are some living parts of it that I'm not enchanted with, and eradicate from my home. Disease-carrying insects, for example.

4. I do love the land, as part of the planet; I do love the earth that sustains me. I am especially attached to the west, where I've spent most of my 50 years.

97. Which isn't impossible...
I love the little town where I live.

The rocks on the ground. The smell of the hay mixed with grass when it's mowed. My two ponds. The trees and the flowers and the dinky little restaurant where we have breakfast every Sunday morning. The small town politics that can get very amusing.

The wildlife and scenery.

The peace and quiet.

The way people are so friendly here and willing to help others.

I love the state I live in.

And I love my home. Nothing more than an orderly conglomeration of wood and plaster and nails and screws.

Why couldn't someone love something within a set of lines on a map?

Why should I love a Government that is slowly becoming tyrannical and eroding the very rights that my family has fought, bled and died for?

My family has made several donations of historical value to the Smithsonian and they are still currently on display there, last time I checked in 2005. Honestly, I'm frankly embarrassed and disappointed in the incompetent administration of Government over the past few decades and its blatant disregard for the Constitution.

Everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others. If this country becomes any more Orwellian, the People will soon start to revoke their consent to be governed.
