Good ol' conservative La Crosse Wisconsin on immigration......
Tuesday's poll results: What impact do illegal immigrants have on the U.S. economy?

Illegal immigrants have a positive effect: Their cheap labor and their consumption help fuel the U.S. economy: 7.9 percent

Illegal immigrants have a negative effect--their cost in social services, suppressed wages and law enforcement aren't worth their labor and consumption: 80.1 percent

Illegal immigrants are neither keeping the economy going nor driving it into the ground: 9.7 percent

Not sure: 2.3 percent

2. I live in La Crosse & I don't read the Tribune's polls anymore
because it is slanted so right wing, as well as the comments (I post there occasionally under "elocs" also and with the same avatar as here). This was addressed just yesterday by the Tribune online editor Marc Wehrs. Reading the polls or the online comments I do have trouble understanding how Obama carried the area so handily in 2008.

Of course, you are as familiar as I am with the illegal immigration issue in this area in places like Arcadia and Norwalk and how those who are illegal there live in fear about the next sweep for illegals. Also there are many in La Crosse who still have not gotten over the Hmong having been brought here.

Basically here in La Crosse we have a shrill contingent who are very vocal on the Tribune comments page and I think they give the impression that they represent a larger portion of the population here than they really do. They really have the YOYO (You're On Your Own) philosophy as well as "too bad, so sad" when it comes to the misfortunes of others--but it's a much different tune they sing when it is their own troubles. They are against spending money for anything, that is unless it somehow benefits them personally. They are narrow and small minded and make you understand why some animals eat their young.

4. I spent a month in Appleton one week...
And I heard a lot of piss & moan about the Hmong. It occurred to me that all the whiners could have been talking about my grandmothers, with their big gardens and cellars full of home-canned food.
And I hear you about the "shrill contingent" - there was a plant full of them there, and I've never been in a place with a larger proportion of jerks and backbiting a*&^&les.
