Just an observation...
readying the number of DU'ers defending the current economic system as a religion, who should read Smith by the way... is amazing. I will tell you why... FINALLY started readying Marx... yes you silly, he is considered by some the LAST of the Classical Economists (which would be a shock to him)... but his critique of those in Germany defending the new order is similar.

Of course he did diagnose some of the problems, but like Smith he was an utopian, and NEITHER system has ever been fully implemented, but that is 'nother story.

I just find it funny... read the intro to Capital and go... damn this could be lifted from... modern pages, whether at DU or Hayek. And this is why at times one has to go to the damn sources... and no I have not finished Smith yet... heavy readying, or for that matter Ricardo... but what is funny is that even they did not agree on a few of the terms... such as value of work...

Oh well...

I know these observations don't do well, but I find them funny.

1. I have seen a couple of threads grumbling about capitalism...
but I'm tired of telling them the great god Pan (I mean capitalism) is dead.

Capitalism is such a neat word, and we Americans are so deeply indoctrinated at calling what passes for an economic system Capitalism, because everybody knows that Capitalism is not only the best thing since sliced white bread, it is sliced white bread, it was invented by Jesus H. Christ so people could give unto Cesar what was Cesar's and to God what is God's.

I find your posts both entertaining and educational.

2. Been dead since oh at least 30 years
what Reagan and crew unleashed was not exactly free trade in the most technical sense (as in Smith's writings) of the term.

And thanks... yes the great god is dead, and has been replaced by a religion with holy books, and of course priests to interpret the holy books. Ye are not supposed to read them yourself, or you might find all the contradictions...

And in any religion this cannot be allowed to happen. We must maintain the orthodoxy...
