Scroll down, you'll find it.

An essay by Andrew Klavan making the rounds on the Internet provides some good food for thought. We all need to nourish our intellect, you know.

Klavan says the best thing about being a Conservative is that he doesn't have to lie. He doesn't have to pretend men and women are the same, that abortions are okay, or that Islam means peace.

The thing he likes least is that honesty is often impolite, "since it's often not really nice to describe things as they are," and he greatly values being considered a gentleman.

Klavan says people with leftist leanings make "tortuous attempts to rename unpleasant facts out of existence." It's not "crippled," it's "handicapped." It's not "a slum," it's "inner city". It's not "surrender," it's "redeployment".

1. Bwwwwaaaaahhhhh !!!!!!!! **snort**

I'd ask if Andrew Klavan is a delusional 16 year old, but our lovely Ava here at DU and at peacetakescourage.com is 16 and she is a brilliant young lady!

11. He's off the back on that one, too.
It's not "handicapped," and it's not even "disabled." It's "someone who experiences a disability," or even better, "someone" who perhaps uses a wheelchair, or needs large print, or some other accommodation.

What this moronic Freeper doesn't get is that people come first, not categories. And language ought to reflect and support that.

7. Thank you, It's been fixed.
The bit right after this one is a hoot.

Why didn't God intervene in the Va.Tech shootings? Because he was kicked out by Madeline Murry O'Hiar in 1963.

8. To be fair, most leftists don't refer to conservatives as "bigoted assholes."
But I'll make an exception and set aside my "leftist leanings" for Klavan and call him what he really is. Hey, I'm just describing things as they are. :)

9. tortuous attempts to rename unpleasant facts out of existence
It's not "rape the environment," it's "clear skies and Healthy Forest" It's not "inheritance tax," it's "death tax". It's not "mean spirited homophobic rampages," it's "family values". It's not "mean spirited anti-women legislature," it's "Pro-life". It's not "killing another person in revenge and oops forget pro-life once we get to know you," it's "capital punishment". blah, blah, blah...

12. What an idiot.
A - I don't pretend men and women are the same. They are drastically different in many ways. Liberals merely want men and women to have equal pay for equal work, equal opportunities, etc, not for the sexes to be "the same".

B - I don't think abortions are "okay". It's more than just choosing what sweater to wear, it's a serious decision. But there are genuine social and medical reasons for abortion and thus it should be legal - that doesn't mean we LIKE it. Contraception is much better than abortion.

C - I would be the last person to say that Islam means peace. All the Abrahamic religions - Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, have been known for their violence, cruelty, intolerance and barbarism. But then again, they have all shown great potential for good at times. I guess that tells us yet again - all things in moderation.

D - Handicapped is more accurate than crippled. Crippled says you can't do anything. Handicapped says you can do various things, but it's a bit more of a challenge.

E - Inner city is more accurate than slum - many inner city neighborhoods are not slums, infact many very tony neighborhoods are in inner cities.

F - Isn't "redeployment" a term invented by the military? How is it we get blamed for that? Besides, liberals are not calling for a "surrender", we're saying we never belonged there in the first place and should get the hell out.

15. I'm just sick of the obsession with language, period.
Why can't everyone be HONEST instead of having to "frame" an issue? The notion of "framing an issue" seems to have Postmodernist, even Straussian/Neo-Con connotations, and I hate PoMo.
