Two weeks after issuing an apology for misstating aspects of his military career, Illinois GOP Rep. Mark Kirk finds himself being truth-squadded again, this time on statements he's made about his career as an educator. The New York Times reports Thursday that while the candidate for the state's open U.S. Senate seat has repeatedly referred to his background as a professional educator, his experience in the classroom is rather thin. Specifically, Times reporter Jeff Zeleny says, Kirk worked "a year in London at a private school and part-time in a nursery school as part of a work-study program while he was a student at Cornell University."
The campaign of Democrat Alexi Giannoulias, Kirk's campaign rival, provided the Times with examples of Kirk's past statements on his teaching career, and the paper later uncovered additional mentions.
In a 2006 speech, according to the paper, Kirk discussed "the kids who were the brightest lights of our country's future, and I also remember those who bore scrutiny as people who might bring a gun to class."
When asked for comment by the Times, Kirk spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski said Kirk was referring to nursery school students in Ithaca, N.Y., in that 2006 speech. She did not elaborate on why Kirk seemed to think nursery school students might carry guns.
