Description:
The word from Topsail Beach in Pender County is not at all encouraging. The weather has caused serious damage to the dunes just re-built to protect the area in hurricane season. Topsail Town Manager Butch Parrish said, "We've just basically got to cross our fingers and live with what we've got." Parrish says the high tides chewing the chunks of sand are causing the most concern. Winds from a late nor'easter rolling white capped waves are devouring dunes the town just rebuilt a few weeks ago to re-enforce barriers eroded from past storms. Parrish said, "We've got worse damage now than we had as a result of Ophelia. Last spring we had a bad nor'easter and we worked real hard this winter to rebuild the dune, and we've lost all of the work we did this winter plus more." He estimates a loss of $1.5 million worth of sand in two days. Homeowner Kim McCallum is now waiting it out, worried erosion will worsen. McCallum said, "People who have property there some where it's coming up to the pilings of the house in some areas." The same storm has battered the entire Carolina coast since Sunday. It's expected to continue slamming the area with sustained winds of 30 miles an hour until Wednesday.
