There are millions of people out there who are outraged by what Israel has done and continues to do in the name of "security" while forcing collective punishment on groups of people who had nothing to do with the holocaust. Millions do not have the courage to speak out and if they did they would be banned, blackballed, fired, or even killed. Helen is an icon whose real reputation and worth cannot be tarnished by those who would like to do so.
There has been more outrage expressed by the organized media over Helen's comments than over the nine lives lost at the hands of the Israelis.

Go on Helen, retire to a much deserved rest. They shouldn't have you to kick around anymore.

and it's current ruling party. You'd think someone like Helen Thomas would keep their pie hole shut and not make any kind of comment at all.
