I learned a couple things on how they "find" main well.

They in essence electrify the main well and that creates a magnetic signature. The relief well has sensors which detect that magnetic flux and it is used like a "homing beacon" to steer themselves closer and closer to the intersection point. Whatever one may think about BP you have to imagine the engineers on relief well team are genuinely interested in having a successful first interception. The project lead (not verified) indicates he has been on 40 relief well teams and they have never missed on first attempt.

2. I figure BP has no interest in a huge PR mess, incredible

costs, internal political squabbling that could cause top management to leave, and no interest in extensive court cases.

Even if they sit in their desks and gloat, "Gee, let's see what species we can make extinct this week, what little kids we can coat in tar as they swim in the Gul," from a purely financial POV this wasn't something they'd have planned. (You'd have to work pretty hard and assume that they're all in the bottom 0.1% on the ethics scale to do otherwise.)

Incompetent? Bad assumptions? Not properly estimating the odds of failure? Sure. In other words, why blame malice for what can be accounted for by simple stupidity?
