21. Here's some info from CNN's article:
Venice, Louisiana (CNN) -- BP said it has collected more than 1,800 barrels of oil since placing a cap over its ruptured undersea well, but video taken Saturday still shows a stream of crude escaping into the Gulf of Mexico. /snip

By Friday afternoon, the company said on its website that it had collected 76,020 gallons of oil in the first 12 hours after it put the cap on the well, which is less than 10 percent of the 798,000 gallons of oil federal authorities estimate is pouring into the Gulf daily. /

http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/06/05/gulf.oil.spill/index.html?hpt=T1

Nothing else in the article, really. So they're saying less than 10%. Honestly, I'll take 1% - whatever.

Update: On June 4, a total of 6,077 barrels of oil was collected. Improvement in oil collection is expected over the next several days.

50. About the gov't estimates...
Basically all the modeling agreed on the fact that 12k was the lower end. The three models overlapped between 12k-19k and they used that as their estimate, however it could be more.

And at it's peak, the RITT (sippy straw) was capturing 8k barrels a day.

I highly recommend reading the report. It's interesting stuff.

http://www.bp.com/liveassets/bp_internet/globalbp/globalbp_uk_english/incident_response/STAGING/local_assets/html/Skandi_ROV1.html

From what I read at TOD, they suspect a leak on the floor?? I have seen them go up to a dome like plume and then back away. I may be all wet on this too...but it's what I saw, not necessarily what they are after.

28. 'Bye bye. Turned in the TV in time to see him end the show. A couple of points:
Cap now in place, in 24 hours captured 6,000 barrels of oil. Estimates 12,000 - 19,000 barrels escaping daily (50%? - wow!)

Vents aren't closed yet, but once closed will be able to capture more.

CNN is going to continue discussing update.

Anchor said Thad Allen said if you're unemployed, come on down and we'll train you; if you have a boat, go ahead and go out and try to help. I wonder if that's because they've got a more realistic idea of just how widespread the devastation is, and know that BP is slacking.

43. Yeah the method has a lot of promise use physics to your advantage.
At the point of the cap seal the water is pushing in at 2500 psi.

Working fluids always take the easiest path (they are "lazy") thus if the back pressure from riser pipe is less than 2500 psi the oil will "want" to flow there.

Unlike a siphon or other methods this is using the pressure @ 5000 ft to your advantage.

56. Exactly. Why are the vents still open? They were supposed to
start closing them, but apparently have not done so. Will they ever be able to?
The video does not inspire any confidence in me that they are actually able to capture a large proportion of that oil.

65. They need to get the pressure correct, too much and it will blow
off the cap. They will be able to if they're successful in achieving the correct pressure. If I don't understand what's going on, I've become confident enough in what they're doing to just realize if they could have done (whatever) they WOULD have done (whatever). No promises were made, it's a time-consuming process, and we can only hope for the best. If this doesn't work, they'll keep trying whatever they can.

27. Spraying More Friggin' Dispersants
I can't tell you how angry I get when I see the robots spraying dispersants into the plume. Why hasn't our EPA cracked down on BP??? This country floors me. They allow an oil company to get away with spraying hundreds of thousands of gallons of a known poison into the ocean. And it looks like those chemicals are resulting in the formation of immense plumes underneath the ocean's surface, that may end up causing even MORE death and destruction than we would otherwise have. Instead of allowing the oil to float to the surface where it can be skimmed, we're letting it form vast death zones that could wipe out sperm whales, lower-dwelling fish, and who knows what else. The entire chain of life is dying in the gulf... as the EPA stands by, shrugs its shoulders, and says, "Whatcha gonna do?"

I am so sickened.

37. The EPA could make the dispersent illegal. They don't.
If something isn't illegal and it works why would you expect a company or individual to not use it.

Tomorrow EPA could ban the dispersant in the United States and make fine $100 million per use. They haven't.

41. That's Why I'm Angry...
Other countries have banned this substance, scientists KNOW it's poisonous, and yet the EPA allows it to be used. That's what sickens me. Our completely broken regulatory system.

I'd think if they're getting 6,000 a day at this point, they might want to stick with it a little longer and see if they can get it where they want it. I'd think. :eyes: Like I know what the hell I'm talking about. :7

"BP engineers are working on a tighter-fitting version of the containment cap that could be ready in a month."

http://www.nola.com/news/gulf-oil-spill/index.ssf/2010/06/bps_latest_containment_system.html

That sentence is the only information given.

They'll likely stick to this design until the new one is ready.

yet they claim it's working? But they are not done? The problem is that to make any real impact they need to reduce the flow substantially and they might lose it all in that attempt.

62. Enterprise ROV 2 is fiddling with what is probably a valve.
Whatever it's doing, it made the gushing out of the hat worse.

Actually, he's not. I volunteer at a <no kill> shelter and this little cutie is one of a litter of six 2-week olds. I took the picture 3 weeks ago. If I wasn't allergic to cats, he WOULD be mine.

80. This is good to know (from TOD, posted by PriorityX):
The engineering group does have multiple teams workings on other options. As soon as a viable idea is identified a team is assigned to it. There is no waiting to see if the current effort fails before they get started.

They are also several steps ahead on the current solution. While we see what is in place, they have already projected ahead to what adjustments may need to be made and the engineering and fabrication is well under way, if not already completed.

85. Where did you hear that from? (I just got home from work - did I miss something?)
Did you happen to see AC 360 last night? I taped it and if it's being played again today, or if you can see it on line, you MUST. He will also have a show on Monday and Tuesday covering the disaster.

The show was aired yesterday and he said that they'd called BP to find out what was going on (they were showing the footage we've been watching) and they got voice mail! Everyone had gone home or they just weren't answering the phone. Anderson had a great point -- why can't they have someone giving an explanation like they do on space launches? He is FURIOUS at BP (as we all are.)

Anyway, did they say we were doing nothing until the wells were completed? I thought they manouvered other caps into the area in case this one doesn't do what they want, they can keep trying.

91. 31 May has sound, 3 June does not, but 3 June had lots to see that needed to be seen.
I'll post the next in series if and when I find it.

These two videos taken together really explained a lot that couldn't be understood, really, in another way nearly as easily.

What's the status?

I just got home.

92. SSDD as far as status. The Top Kill lines in reverse is a big effing deal that will hit next week.
Those lines flowed enough to overcome the flow of the well when the pump was at full blast. If they can suck pre-exit oil at a decent rate, they may be able to snuff the flow enough to cause seawater to flow into the Top Cap.

96. Well, not exactly
But it would be nice if the 2 methods combined could suck up the majority of the oil. They would have to choke back on the Top Cap flow if it started sucking in seawater.

98. The reports I was hearing was that they were capturing oil into a tankard.
I don't see anything happening on the cams, but I admit I've been watching them sparingly so I don't get throttled again. So it seems the next thing are the wells that will be completed the earliest in August, which is what they are saying and not much more. I'm sure BP is doing their damnedest to control the message. They still are ordering people away from filming the dead birds and such. I can't believe our media is so compromised that we can't get the truth. So I'm as much in the dark as you are. Maybe others following this will weigh in if they have more current information.

101. Thread #23 is up and ready for the morning.
Since there are now 101 posts on #22, it was time to move on. This time I put it on wordpad with all the whole urls so it will be just a few seconds to put up a new thread instead of going to hunt down all the right urls and putting the images in. I fixed one for the BP cams that was a 404 now. Also added back in the May 31st video from BP.

Ah the joys of being up and wide awake at 2:00am. ;-)
