2. Half of them die within two weeks of being cleaned
The rest of them die within 5 weeks or so. It's better to euthanize.

4. There's only so much so many people can do
and I'm sure they're doing what they can.

I know it's heartbreaking:cry:

If you're feeling helpless try contacting a wildlife rescue organization in the Gulf area and see what they need. Usually money but supplies and even food/water are always appreciated. Pizza and chicken can be ready ordered over the phone and delivered. Even the little things can be huge.

6. +1
And towels. Lots and lots of towels. They don't weigh much and are easy to ship.

You are so right we can never have too many towels/rags, or soap, or bleach, or laundry soap, trash bags, or TP,.. etc.

13. Before you give them anything
find out who is paying for the costs of the spill.

The one spill I volunteered on we ate like kings because the company that spilled the oil was paying for the rescue and rehab of the birds. :P

11. They can't even get to a lot of them even if it would help.
BP doesn't want anybody to see them much less take pictures or help them. They are turning the anyone away at every point they can.

12. I feel you, but the scale of this is such for every one we might get to
Edited on Fri Jun-04-10 03:25 AM by JCMach1
100s or 1000s of more will die out of sight, out of mind... The larger part of a whole ecosystem is collapsing... that cannot be rescued...

16. that is what BP does not want us to see
last night on Hardball Chris Matthews suggested to initiate some kind of "environmental peace corp" to all students who are just graduating from college and who do not have jobs to help with the clean up.

19. Good idea but be careful
To protect them from toxic exposure. We don't need a lot of volunteers getting sick and dying years later like what happened at Ground Zero while the damn Bush EPA and Ghouliani were assuring the firefighters, cops, construction workers & other good-hearted volunteers the site was safe.

18. There are long-term issues to consider, too:
"They’ve got plenty of people down on the Gulf Coast washing oil off birds. Ed Clark is focusing his attention at the Wildlife Center of Virginia on ecosystem issues.

“We don’t need to go down there and wash birds. They’re already well cared for by the professional groups. What we’re working on is the evaluation of what might be the long-term implications for wildlife, not only in that region, but since migratory birds come through that ecosystem, it might eventually mean that water fowl in Virginia have health effects that originate with the oil spill. Or it could be eagles eating fish that died from oil contamination that floated up to the surface, since eagles are scavengers. What might that oil do to those eagles? The implications of this are enormous, and there really aren’t any good mechanisms in place to follow up on them,” said Clark on Thursday."
