Donate to help fishermen?
Edited on Wed Jun-02-10 10:23 PM by JeffersonChick
I'm wondering if anyone's started a fund to provide aid to Gulf fishermen? Particularly because they probably won't see any financial relief for a while - and they need it now.

If not, I'm thinking I'll check out how to do that. Suggestions welcome!

1. I certainly would be in on that donation, and I hope that maybe we can get something going here.

3. BP should be paying them. This is different from natural disasters where we are donating because

it was Mother Nature who caused the damage. Here there is a "responsible party" who should be paying for everything.

The press asked earlier why the President hadn't declared a natural disaster - the answer was that the declaration is a requirement from the Stafford Act (I think) which is what triggers federal money to flow to the states or communities. This is man-made so BP is supposed to pay for everything.

edit to add - it is a wonderful thought though. :)

4. BP should be paying them, but we all know how long that will take for BP to come through...
In the mean time, these people have no monies coming in and certainly would appreciate anything that we can do for them.

5. I agree BP should be helping them
But that will likely take a really long time, and the fishermen need it now.

6. BP has asked for tax statements.
Landrieu, I heard, announced that BP was going to pay one year of lost income. One year for a fifty year disaster.

But some subsistence people were working off the books and they have not only lost their jobs, they can't prove they ever had any.
