NASA satellite shows oil 20 miles from Florida Keys
Source: NASA/MODIS

On May 27, the first filament from the BP oil spill is seen approaching the Florida coast.

The leading edge is approximately 20 miles west of the Dry Tortugas in the Florida Keys.

Surface currents in the Loop Current travel between 1 and 3 miles per hour, or 25 to 75 miles a day.

4. Talked to a friend of mine who lives in Key West today
This spill has decimated the city. Already, numerous businesses have closed. It's having a horrible impact, and it hasn't even reached the peak yet.

7. Key West lives primarily on tourism
and it's fallen off a cliff since the oil gusher happened. It's crazy expensive to live (or own a business) in Key West. Without a daily influx of tourists, what's been built there in the last 15 years is going to go-to-hell fast.

15. I would cancel too. Who wants to make this disaster the focus of ones vacation
Regardless one would be in the middle of a city of folks who are afraid of losing everything.

I love the Keys, so beautiful.

14. I guess BP hasn't found a way to censor images from the satellites yet.
They'll probably find a way before this is over though.

19. That's what I've been thinking.
I'm sure they will find a way. They are trying their damnedest to hide how bad this really is, but it's still leaking through.
