Palin makes good on fence threat
Author writing a book about her has moved in next door

WASILLA, Alaska - Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is making good on a threat to build a fence around her Wasilla home to keep her new neighbor — an author who is writing a book about her — from peering in.

Palin, wearing running shorts, a T-shirt and visor, joked with a reporter outside the gate of her lakeside home Thursday about having to build a fence to protect her family's privacy. But she declined further comment, saying she was busy babysitting her nephews.

Palin, the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, took to Facebook on Monday to "welcome" author Joe McGinniss, who'd previously written a critical magazine article on Palin. She said he was renting a house next door "for the next five months or so" and wondered what he'd gather "while overlooking Piper's bedroom, my little garden, and the family's swimming hole?"

She said work would begin on a "tall fence tomorrow."

On Wednesday, a picture of the wooden fence was posted on the blog of Fox News' Greta Van Susteren. Palin is a contributor to Fox News.

McGinniss, author of such best-selling books as "The Selling of the President," "Blind Faith" and "Fatal Vision," is planning a book, tentatively titled, "Sarah Palin's Year of Living Dangerously." It could be on book shelves next year.

McGinniss' publishing house, Broadway Books, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

A tree-lined lane leads to Palin's lakeside home; there's also a gate to help keep gawkers at bay.

Attempts to reach neighbors on either side of her property weren't successful. A chain-link fence blocks one drive, which is also marked "Private, keep out." No one answered at the other, which is posted "Private property. Enter at your own risk."

2. People who aren't doing anything wrong have nothing to hide
I seem to recall that being one of the explanations proffered for the USA PATRIOT Act and its unconstitutionally intrusive sections. So, what is Mrs. Palin trying to hide?

8. Bullshit. If some Rethug like Corsi decided to set up camp near Obama's sister
so that he could spy on her in her nightgown or with her lovers, that's an invasion of privacy. Palin makes me vomit, but invasions of privacy make me livid. We have so little privacy left.

9. Living next door to somebody is NOT an invasion of privacy.
Sorry, I support the journalist 100% on this one.

11. Living next door to someone with the intent to gather information IS an invasion of privacy.
In California, stalking laws would cover this. No celebrity in town would put up with this for a minute.

12. This is Alaska, not California
California standards on stalking do not apply.

This is NOT a stalking case under the law and NO privacy has been invaded.

It's deliberately invading privacy and she has the right to defend it. I don't care who it is, any cheering for invasion of privacy hurts all of us.

Now that's it. I'm not kicking this thread anymore.

14. I don't think you understand the term 'invasion'
or the concept of someone being allowed to rent a property and do normal things, like writing. It's possible California has laws that would stop this; but then, California has a lot of craziness in it, doesn't it?

20. Actually CA law would not stop this
though informal pressure might well be used

15. I don't think it is an invasion of privacy but I do find it creepy
I think it would be one thing to move to Wasilla to dig up dirt, but it is kind of weird to me that an author thinks he has to move next door. Doesn't make me think much of the author.

22. I beg your pardon?
I simply used irrefutable Republican logic (IRL) as used to justify the USA PATRIOT Act and applied it to Mrs. Palin's situation. I'm surprised that she would go to such great lengths to conceal her activities, because IRL says a person like that has something to hide.

Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun,
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.

4. The Great Wall of Wasilla
She could employ hundreds of her minions to build the wall and build replicas of them in underground vaults. Then have them sacrificed as a tribute.

Just like they did in the old days.

17. Are you saying neither she nor Todd have siblings?
And that therefore it's impossible for her to have nephews? I'm not that familiar with the detail of their families.

I don't see where Tripp or Trig come into it.

19. "Fences make good neighbors" -
- Without consideration of my personal opinion of either of them, I can't say I blame her. Knowing someone next door is gawking would be unnerving. If I had a nosy neighbor, I'd build a fence, too.
